My understanding was that they called it a draw. Muso Gonnosuke Katsuyoshi was the guys name and some records say they met twice the first time Musashi won, causing Gonnosuke to go away & rethink his strategy and "invent" the Jo and the style Shinto (or Shindo) Muso-ryu jojutsu. It is then unclear if Gonnosuke defeated Musashi outright or if the second bout ended in a "double defeat" (Musashi used a bokken instead of a katana). Either way, honour was satisfied and they both agreed to call it a draw.
