File grinding a bevel post heat treat?

Bingo! except I didn't glue belt section down, faster & less hesitation to put on fresh belt. Also 1" wide = higher pressure with less effort.

I used to do this more, nowaday occasionally employ this technique when certain situations my VFD 2x72 at min speed is still too fast and when I want to length-wise scratches (instead of vertical).

That is best tool I made and use .Good for cleaning after HT , good for take of decarb. layer , excelent to put finish on knife .This is my first kitchen knife I made , from already hardened D2 steel 1.5mm thickness with this tool
In my home they are afraid to look at this knife not to use it ......that sharp is, he just glide through :)

But I plan to live forever! :D

But seriously... thanks for the reality check. The first piece of equipment I bought for making knives was a lowly 1x30 belt sander. Now, even though I do hacksaw everything by hand, I can't imagine putting in the bevels by hand tools... spoiled I guess.

It's actually not that bad. From personal experience, let me give you a break down of an hours work of hand filing.

15 minutes actual draw/push filing to remove material
15 minutes using my file card to remove the metal that is clogged between the teeth
30 minutes vacuuming the scraps to ensure I don't step on any (they hurt...)

Not sure if it has been mentioned yet but get yourself a file card! You will definitely need it.

Your filing/sandpaper setup looks great. I bet it is awesome for going up the grits for final polish.
