where can i buy a guide to make the guard set straight so you can file them the same?
i have one but it is hard to adjust to make both side the same and the one uncle al sales is way out of my reach. Harden tool steel is ok with me.

Right over on the Knifemakers "Supplies & Tools " for sale. RUJOCO makes and sells a nice fully hardened O1 file guide for $29 shipped.

How does that jig go to dead square on every setting, without guide rods? Is it threaded that true, and tight? I just don't see that as being as good as it could be.

I made one similar to Uncle Als. It took me a couple days to make, I should have just bought his. I like it though because it has carbide inserts and is all milled to exactly 90 degrees.

It is dead on. There is NO slop in the screws. I purchased a small one from him. I also have Uncle Al's which I though was a bit steep but it is one serious file guide. Well worth the $$.

Thanks for the support jll346.
The whole thing only works if the individual pieces are machined together. Each guide is alligned in my toolmakers vice and never leaves it until they have been drilled on one drill press and tapped on another. The tap passes through the guide hole into the bottom piece resulting in pretty precise allignment. I used to make them with guide pins and found no benefit in them. I would consider pins if I started filing across a half inch or more but that's not likely to be a neccesity. The pins also add to the machining time (money) and cracking problems in heat treat. The guide is on a knife 5 minutes if that. Once it's on, the bulk of the work is done on the grinder (belt) then a touch up with a file.

The only intent was to make them affordable to everyone who didn't or couldn't make their own. This whole venture started out as a favor to a couple fellow makers. I know they're not the best you can buy but I stand behind every one of them. I'm not defending myself here just giving the doubting Thomas's a little more information than they might be aware of. Either you like em or you don't. ;):D
