Hi Guys,
I need advice on a good file guide. I placed an order for one of Al's (Riverside Machine) carbide file guides a couple of weeks back but he's just informed me that he isn't shipping to Australia anymore.

Does anyone know of any other decent carbide file guides from other suppliers? I'm chasing carbide faces because I want to use it with the belt grinder.

Cheers,
Steve.

I dont know any makers offhand, but i have heard people use a set of 123 blocks with a set of carbide scraper blades epoxied to them.

ABS Master Smith John Perry makes a very fine carbide-faced filing guide as well as other knifemaking tools. perrycustomknives.com

Email him and inquire. He also makes a superior broach for scraping out the tang-hole in stag, ivory, etc.

Cheers,

Steve, I just bought a guide from Al, but haven't gotten it in the mail, yet. If you don't have any luck with other options, let me know and I'll mail this one to you and order another.

We can workout the details, I'm sure.

Thanks for the suggestions and links, I'll have a look into all these options and may be able to find/make a decent alternative.

Vaughn - thanks very much for the offer, I'll look into my options some more and if it comes down to it i'll get back in touch and maybe we can sort something out

Cheers,
Steve

Know anyone in the states you could have an order from Al's shipped to, so they could in turn could ship it to you?

Why do they need to be carbide faced? 2 pieces of steel will do the same thing.

I didn't miss anything. Hardened steel works quite well. Even soft steel works. I have used a plunge grinding jig made of angle iron for years. This is the same thing you guys call a "file guide."
