I am in the market for a file guide. Uncle Al's with the carbide faces seems to be the ticket, though the $150 is a little off putting. Anyone familiar with other options that I am not seeing?

Right now that's pretty much the only option. I have one and it's awesome. I also have a cheaper A2 hardened one from another company. It works, but it's not as tight of an alignment and you can't run the belts up against it.

The Uncle Al's guide is great. Best on the market.

How do you propose using this file guide?

I have one of Fred's and one of Uncle Al's. Fred's is nice and a great price, but I find that I use the one from Uncle Al the most. I grind every knife with it and don't worry about the belts hurting it. It is pricy though. I had to bite the bullet and consider it a necessary tool for the shop.

I'm not making anymore as my backlog of knife orders is too great. I sold this one and I see it is for sale now. Its still a good buy at this price. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/980331-Carbide-File-Guide-BRAND-NEW

edited to apologize for saying he copied my file guide. He didnt copy it but in fact that is one of mine. Its my hand, its my picture. Sorry to give wrong information. I'll pm him and try to make things right.

That looks just like the A-2 guide I bought from Tracy with carbide faces JB welded on . I like the idea .

I have the regular hardened file guide. I think I would much rather have the carbide faced one. It has just enough slop that you often get a little line at the gaurd. Also being able to use it with the grinder would be a big plus.

I like Uncle Al's file guide and even though a bit pricey you only have to buy it once. It will serve you well for both filing shoulders and starting your plunge cuts.
