I started working on my first knife this weekend and began with an old file. I softened the file in the forge i had built but the hair dryer i was using for the forge broke down. So i have the knife cut out and the initial grind almost finished, but im not sure what to do about the heat treatment after i drill the holes for the pins. I know you can send blanks into heat treatment places to get it done. Does anyone know about someone that heat treats file knives?

Let's get this in the right forum so you can get your questions answered.

There's a good sticky post on the topic of file knives. Go read it, then ask followup questions.

Since its your first knife I'll do it for you for free. All you have to pay is return shipping. I can't guarantee how good the H/T will be because its an unknown steel but I'll give it my best shot. I'll also send you a piece of actual blade steel fully annealed and ready to work when I return it. Also, be aware that since it was a file, it may have stress risers that may cause it to crack in the quench. Having said all that and sounding like some type of lawyer, it'll probably be fine and make a decent knife.

liknelric,
Welcome to Bladeforums, and Shop Talk.
Darrin is one of our stand up guys, and helps a lot of new makers. He will take good care of your blade.

Filling out your profile will help us help you. When we know where you live and a bit about you, it helps us make good answers.
For instance, if you live in Romania, Darrin's kind offer would be useless. If you live in the USA, there might be a maker within a short drive, or even down the street, who will offer a shop visit and you can do the HT with them.
Your profile should tell us where you live, how old you are, what you do for a living, and a little about you and your interests. Even if you think your info is boring, tell it how it is. A make-believe profile is a bad idea, because it tells the world you are a make believe knifemaker.

On your next knife project, make some plans and sketches, and post the project here as a WIP. You will get advise and critique from some of the best makers around. By the time you are ready to cut and shape the steel you will have the shape worked out and the build process figured out, too. There may be offers of materials to help you get started in knifemaking, as well as offers of help with things you can't do yet ( Like Darrin's offer). In any build project or question, give us the info we will need to make a good answer. The steel type, blade size, knife type, and any construction details that are pertinent to the question. That helps up give a helpful answer.
