Welcome to the site. The best carving knife I've ever had was made from a file by my grandpa in Eastern Kentucky. But like the first guy said read the posts. I'd tell you but I don't I'm still learning myself and don't want to pass bad info. Good luck.

what is the best way to temper a knife steel like this? where it is flexable but also will hold a razor edge? or can file knives even hold a razor edge?

The best way is in a purpose-built salt pot or oven. A lot of people use regular kitchen ovens or toaster ovens with good results though.
It can be done with a torch, but I don't recommend this unless you are willing to accept a lot of trial and error in learning the technique.

If you start with a good file, heat treat and temper it it properly..... yeah, they will defiantly hold a hair popping edge and be tough as nails.

I have some made by Robert Dark & Michael Morris, to name two people; that are some of the best all around knives I have. As I have already said.....
They.. are ..tough.. as.. nails!

As has already been said, there is a lot of excellent information already in threads h3re if you will just take time to search it out.

Good luck..... :)
