Hey guys, Been practicing the grinding and figured why not practice on an old file...This is the result. I liked it so much I made a sheath for it. It's about 5 1/2 overall..what do you think??

It looks pretty nice to me, nice flowing lines. Personally I would like to have a "real" handle on it to save my hand from the remaining file teeth. I'm wondering if all those teeth are going to hold moisture and encourage rust??? Can you share a little more about how you made it please? Is it the file as it was or did you temper it or anneal it? You were able to drill a hole it the handle so you must have done SOMETHING to it.

I left most of the file as is except I wrapped the blade end in a cold wet rag so I could anneal the end of the handle for thong hole. In the third photo down you can see where it was heated (the heated end is discolored). The file was so worn that the teeth don't have the sharpness of a new file so the grip is actually quite comfortable. As far as rust goes a good wipe down like any other carbon steel blade would probably do a pretty good job of keeping the rust at bay!!
I'll tell you that little bugger is sharp though!!

Looks like a handy knife
How did you get your name on the spine, is it etched?

Danny, this would help a lot to get a straighter stitch line:

I am curious as to the reason for the cross stitching between the two lines in a few places?

That's next on my list Patrice..That is a handy looking tool. I just threw the extra stitches in there for a little extra strength. Do you hand stitch Patrice? If so do you pre punch your stitch holes with anything or just force the needle through. I punch through with an awl and the awl holes are never straight and they tend to be larger on one side due to the taper of the awl.

Sadly yes I do hand stitch Danny. Love it sometimes, hate it most time. I pre-punch holes and there is a variety of ways to do it with drill press, Dremel, small press. I would highly suggest getting Chuck's DVD at Wild Rose:
