File too Large

Spark Spark Thanks for the explanation Kevin. Will do whatever makes life easier for everyone. Have a great holiday werkend.

I'm still finding it inconsistent, a pic I posted yesterday is 'Too Large' today :(

This photo of mine is 3619 X 2717, and is 493.7 KB. It's lost a lot of detail from being compressed, but I had no trouble loading it.

The alternative is using a hosting site. This photo is 3845 X 2655, and is 1.6MB. The physical dimensions matter less than total file size.

I've been running into this trying to post gifs... How do I use the gallery to post pics and gifs to threads?

And while we’re at it, can anyone tell me how to delete things from my galery?
It’s like Hotel California in there....;)

I would also like some further explanation of the media gallery? I’m fairly new here and maybe I missed some how to or something. But I usually just recapture images I take on my phone and they would resize and be uploaded. This no longer works and it took me and hour to get pics loaded on my last post. Anywhere I can read up on the “correct” way to do this? Without an external hosting site

Just as an update I tried to create a media folder and upload an image into that and ran into the same problem. I don’t have a pc so I use my phone to take the pictures and upload and post them. Usually I would just take a screen shot of the pic and the size would be accepted. Never had any issues until a few days ago. Now I can’t get hardly anything to upload. Anyone doing this with an iPhone have any recommendations? Thanks

I had no idea about the MEDIA GALLERY. o_O I guess I missed that memo.

Oh yeah, and I have been getting the same too large message, though inconsistent and seemingly arbitrary.
OK - now that I understand the need for reduced capacity.

Jack Black directed me to this thread a moment ago. I had no idea anyone else was having issues. First I have heard of the "media gallery".

I’ve been having the same issue and even after I re-sized the photos I was unable to upload the pictures. Im trying to upload pictures at 1000x1000 and the limit is 1600x1600 if I’m not mistaken.

Any help would be appreciated.

If it's too large dimensionally, too large in file size, or you've exceeded a 50mb quota, you won't be able to upload.

Sigh. I tried so hard to get an official answer last year. I started a thread, got some input from other members and a few mods, but no definitive answer as to a data quota. Now Spark Spark , you say there's a 50 mb quota. Please tell us what that means. Is it per some timeframe, or a total data ever posted. If I exceed this quota, will going back to my old posts and deleting pictures clear space and allow me to post pictures again?

I want to know if there is a total limit to the amount of data I'm allowed to upload? How many pictures will Bladeforums support? If there is a limit, I have not found where I would be able to erase some pictures in order to make room for others.
I'm talking about pictures directly uploaded into posts, not media libraries.
Thanks for any answers and insight into this issue.

If I'd known that there was a finite amount allowed, I would have edited my pictures accordingly a year and a half ago.

Total. We're not an image hosting site. People filled up 80gb of server space in under a year largely from uncompressed & duplicate images. I instituted the quota to keep us from running out of additional space. I strongly suggest that if you are posting images for education or historic purposes you use a professional hosting company of some sort as that is what they do.

If one was to delete uploaded files from the original threads would that clear up the space in that quota allocated to said files?

Is uploading to the media page different than uploading files to individual threads?

I’ve never used the “media gallery” and have been screen shotting pics on my phone. Uploading those screen shots using the “Upload a File” button under the reply box has never been an issue until the last few days for me.

I’m curious also on how to get back under the “quota” if that applies in my case. I liked posting this way much better than using a 3rd party app because there’s less steps and less having to switch back and forth.

I found using a third party app fine, but was foolish enough to believe that the BF direct upload, we were encouraged to use, would be more reliable - should have known better
