I've seen file work done after marked on producton pices that were definatly heat treated first, but how about pieces designed with filework in mind? I imagine file work would be easier before a blade was hardened, but don't know if that makes it more likely to warp or poorly temper during heat treating. Thoughts?

Real carbide burrs (industrial type) will allow you to file work and carve after heat treat without a problem.

Filework before heat treat is easier but If I have to do it after heat treat I use diamond coated burrs, they leave a very smooth finish that mirror polishes quickly.
