just wondering if doing file work before heat treating, could it deform the fine edged details? its much easier to do in its "soft" state but im not sure if it would warp or burn of the fine stuf.
Do the file work before heat treating. Its much easier. The heat wont harm the detailed file patterns. If you edge quench, It doesnt matter when you file but cant file too close to the tip because the steel is too hard. Do you use a dremel for filework? Bruce
I do all filework before ht because it leaves a black backgroung and set's the filework off ,I also do it very deep so if I happen to get too deep on the grinder it still look's good

The fancy filework should be done before heat treat. Many stainless steels are harder than a file after heat treat. I use a system I built to get me started on the 1/2 round patterns. You can see a picture of it here.
Dremels will work. Just take it slow.

Wow, Gene, that is a very nice set up!!! I have a router and table settin there gathering dust, might as well use it for something. May I ask where you buy your carbide cutters, and what their item numbers are?? Thanks! Michael
I get them at garage sales, pawn shops and from tool dealers at Gun Shows. You can also get them from MSC www.mscdirect.com
Their catalog is so huge UPS delivers it.
