I have plalyed around a little with this but I need to learn more about the techniques and which files to use for each type of look. I remember seeing online and I think it may have been on this forum all about veining and filing.

Does anyone know of online references and or books on this subject?

I would also like some recomendations as to the brand of needle files and where to buy the needle files that will hold up for doing this work? The one I have came from Home Depot and are not too great.

I want to get started practising for and upcoming knife I am designing. Thanks for any info along these lines!

You can go to, http://www.knifehow.com/ , and click "Vine Filework" or go to any of the several link sites listed in the stickies at the top of this forum and find filework tutorials. There are some good DVD's on it ,too. They can be rented from smartflix. , or purchased from the knife suppliers and/or the websites of the makers.

Thanks for the link!
I am still looking recomendations on places to purchase needle files and brand names purchased. I have found that word of mouth on this subject can save many dollars in buying highly advertised files, only to find out they suck and wouldn't cut hot butter!!!!!!
This also lets me know if I have a local source for files or if I am going to have to purchase off of online.
Any more info on sources for learning the techniques of fileing and vineing would be appreciated as well!

I don't have the most experience on this but after looking around for a while and trying some cheap files I got a set of 6 Valtitan needle files from Rio Grande (jewelry supplier). They are: "Rockwell hardness 72HRc. Better performance on hard-to-file surfaces. Little or no clogging; a simple knock is enough to remove the chips. Highly resistant to corrosion. Longer life than standard files."

I've seen them recommended on the forums before and supposedly if you use them properly they are worth the price.

Thanks for the info! That's the kind of feedback I am looking for!

I was at Fastenall today so thought to look at there files but they didn't have any needle files in stock.
While there I asked the guy while I was looking at the files they had if they carried end mill bits in stock. He did not have a clue what and end mill bit was. Do you belive that? Where do they get these people from.

Rent the fileworking video, or better yet BUY the video, by Duane Dushane sp? It is a wealth of knowledge and will get you started on the right foot. I watch it over and over. Extremely useful.

It took a little work to find it. Go to Smartflix.com and go to knifemaking. The video is under Dwayne Dushane and fileworking. Thanks for the lead!

I promise you'll love it. It'll all make sense after watching the video about 30 times.:D
