hello!
I was hoping to get some opinions on favoured brands/models of files and hacksaw blades.
My little workshop is sadly lacking and I don't want to waste money on crap tools. I prefer instead to pay a bit more at the outset and end up with better stuff.
Your input and advice is greatly appreciated!
:)

For files you can't go wrong with Nicholson :) They're made of W1 so they cut through annealed steel like butter unlike the cheapies that are made of mild steel and case hardened. Plus they're made in the USA! But you live in Canada so that's not as much of a factor though :o

I wouldn't know about hacksaw blades though since mine has cut so much steel that the makers mark has worn off but I suppose any bi-metal blade would work well. Cutting fluid helps too.

get those home depot ones... once they wear out you caan return them for new ones :)

Nicholson files (I have had less that satisfactory results with store brand and Simmons)
Bimetal hacksaw blades (Nicholson has worked well for me, Starrett good as well)

thanks for the info.
I do prefer to buy n. american manufactured stuff as much as possible:thumbup:

Hacksaw blades...
Starret Green stripes for cutting mild or annealled steel and red stripes for cutting hardened steel.

Files...as said above Can't go wrong with Nicholson's

I order starrett blades from littlemachineshop when I'm dinking around spending money on toys.

Nicholson files are great for general work, for filework and fine stuff, I have a random assortment of expensive jewelers files.

thank you so much for the advice guys, I really appreciate it:)
