A friend who own a machine shop gave me a number of used files.. lots of life in most of them.. any ideas on the best way to clean them and restore them for use. thanks

Most files can be cleaned up with a short soak in sulphuric acid. (about 30 sec.-1 min.) A milder sulphuric is the type sold as battery electrolyte at auto parts stores. Once the soak is done, make sure you soak for a few minutes in a saturated baking soada solution to neutralize the acid. Dry, give a quick spritz of WD-40, and off you go.
