Files

Quite a long time, if you are filing correctly(long, even strokes in one direction, not back and forth) on annealed steel. If you are working on hardened or partially hard steel, much shorter, like one knife, possibly less.

I'm on my 5th knife after switching to a hand filing jig. No signs of wearing. Be sure to get a file card and clean often.

Nicholson works well for me, I have about 50 mostly come from farmers market buc or 2. Out of 10 I get 6 or 7 that are near new

Depends on the size of the knife, how much material there is to remove. 8" Chefs knives vs paring knives? Depends on what material is being removed. 1095 vs Elmax? Depends on the file, too. A Pferd Chipbreaker vs sLowe's Kobalt?

Recently, I put a flat grind on a 28 inch sword (O1) with a Nicholson file and it's still very good.
