I would like to add some filework to the tang of a knife that will have stabilized wood scales. How do I epoxy the scales on without having the epoxy bleed into the filework? I know that I could just put the epoxy on the lower 3/4 of the tang, but wondered if there is a way for me to avoid having the "top" portion of the scale without epoxy. Thanks

I think some guys put scales on without any epoxy. When I've done filework on full tang knives I epoxy and pin the scales then use acetone and cue tips to clean out the filework. Hope that helps.

Another solution is to simply color the epoxy with model paint or the dry colorant knife suppliers sell, and let it fill the filework. Good luck!

One other way to clean up the epoxy is to catch it at the moment it is rubbery and peel it off the tang and out of the filework (I use this way all the time)any small pieces left can be picked out of the file work with dental picks and acetone for clean up...

Other thing to do is to glue the scales to a thin piece of metal say 25 thousandths thick and then not glue that to the tang just pin or screw the scales with the spacer to the tang,The contrasting spacer can look very elegant on a handle also.

Thanks for the metal tip Bruce.

Here is a picture of one of mine done with the spacers:

You can see it done on some of Tim Hancocks Bowies and Bruce Bump did one not to long ago and showed it here on the forums.Makes a great way to not mess up a blued tang or fileworked tang, also a Damascus tang.
