Filicietti

Steve did amazing stuff with steel. I spoke to him in Australia to get a standard Damascus/ivory knife project going for me several years ago. The knife would have cost around $2000-$2200 for delivery in about a year. All he wanted from me was to send him $1800 immediately before he started the thing. I challenged him on it essentially telling him that that is an absurd request. I never spoke to him again.

Turns out the guy was a total pos crook and thanks to everyone here who has pounded the saying "never pay for a knife up front or give large deposits", I was smart enough not to send him a dime.

You couldn't give me one of his knives. Seriously.

Ellis, Ouch! Makes one expensive knife! Was it a fancy one or basic like mine? Would you like your money back or two knives one day? Old sore so you don't have to answer.

Thanks all for the input so far.

STeven; yes, I am a bit and over a good few years it seems. Probably because SF caught my imagination at the the time and then screwed up so abruptly.

So having wanted one of his knives I've never stopped looking and have dropped the name in forums to see what came up. Always when digging it up the rip off merchant raises its ugly head. However, no one has ever given much detail; maybe its not my business either. So yet again pick pick picking I have a little more to go on. He took some money and quite a bit it seems. Having said that this thread has given me a couple of really interesting tip bits.

Probably, time I put the witch hunt to bed. Doesn't stop me from liking Filicietti's work. Fortunately there are plenty of talented makers who won't rob you.

I stopped wanting one of his knives a long time ago; for several reasons. One, he ripped off several good friends of mine. One, in particular, strikes home in my memory. A good friend of mine ordered and received a beautiful ivory handled bowie from the guy. Something wasn't right, or wasn't as agreed upon, so my friend sent it back as Filicietti requested for a touch up. My friend never heard from the guy again, nor has he ever received his knife back. We're talking about a pretty expensive bowie, too. Several thousand bucks.

My personal experience never got that far, thank goodness. I was very interested in his knives at the time(who wouldn't have been? The dude did nearly flawless work) and I did order a knife from him. I believe it was an 8-9" carbon steel bowie with Ringed Gidgee handle. Got an email reply from him with a price quote. I was quoted a more than fair price and an even more fair delivery date(couple weeks, if I remember correctly) Somewhere in my replies, I made the mistake of mentioning that I was friends with the man who had received the ivory bowie, and I never heard from Mr. Filicietti again. Thank goodness I never sent him any money.

Unacceptable behavior. Mesmerizing work.

(I have no idea who Filicietti is, but reading about his many talents and his devotion to perfection mindset reminds me of Jimmy. Again sorry for any confusion, I have the utmost respect for the old man)

^^^ That is one of my all time favourites of his right there.

+1:thumbup: That is about the nicest one i've seen also. Awesome knife Alferd! The skin on the sheath is exceptional too.

I poached that photo off of Knife Art several years ago, as I recall. Was my desktop wallpaper for several months, but I've never owned the knife. One of my all-time favorites, also.

I remember it from Knifeart - back when they used to carry a LOT of really nice forged fixed blades.

As I recall KnifeArt priced it under $3K. Quite a value even in today's depressed market, I would think.
