Filing fixture

Allright, I have made plenty of hidden tang knives in the past (filing the blade to a line, using the Warenski method of filing the guard, and then soldering). However, after being in Moss's shop and seeing the fit that he has with his guards, and seeing that he gets that fit using a mill on both blade and guard, I haven't done a hidden tang blade since I went down there last year.

But, with two customer's asking for them, I figured I could give it another try using a filing fixture. I know it's not even close to the precision of a mill, but it's better than by eye.

I saw one for sale at knifeart.com, but it's like $95. I was wondering, can't I just do the same thing by putting 4 fine thread bolts into two pieces of parallel steel.

I was thinking that all the scrap 0-1 I have would work. But then again I have plenty of ATS odds and ends too.

I figured the main thing is making sure that the parallel surfaces of steel are true to each other and thick enough that the file won't just rock on them.

Any thoughts and input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Nick

Nick, FYI
Made my fixture from a couple of scrap peices of 3/8 5160. Drill, tap, square up, harden and leave at full hardness.
Biggest thing that helped me fit guards was being showen to leave them a little undersized in reguards to the tang hole, and then literally driving them on with a brass drift and small hammer. Makes for a pressed fit, little or no line to solder.

HI.. The item you are looking for is available
from Jim Downie Ph. (519)243-2290 or www.downieknives.downie.com.
I have been using one for about a year and it is great. Best of all it was only $32.00 Cdn. Which is about 15-16 dollars U.S. at the current exchange rate and even postage from Canada will only be a couple of bucks. Give him a call, he and his wife are good people always nice to deal with at shows.

Made my new one from hardened d-2,my first one was from some scrap from a machine shop and didnt harden like it should have, but it worked untill I dished it out by filing to deep.I have seen one made where the guy welded two pieces of hardened steel to the jaws of a pair of vice grips then had the edges squared,it worked slick. You can also scribe a line even on both sides of the blade and file to the lines keeping the file flat.If you make the fixture yourself remember to keep the holes tight as this will let you get off in diffrent angles everytime you clamp it up.....just my opinions and findings,Bruce
