I finally had time to make myself a fillet knife. Here it is with a Bass that swallowed the hook and died today. So what do you guys think?

The pics are really quite bad and don't do this thing any justice. I just wanted to post something as I haven't for quite some time.:)

I forgot to mention that it is made from .060 thick material Ht'd to 60 RC and it flexes like nothing I've ever seen.

Nick:)

The knife looks very useful and I like the handle material and blade design.
The steel you chose makes an excellent fillet knife.

The blade does seem oversize to me, edge to spine, unless your bass grow bigger than ours you don't need that much blade to fillet that fish.

But thats just a pond pluggers view.:D
We each have our preferences.

This is what I use. Its 5/8" from spine to edge measured at the ferrule.

Good fishing, Fred

Nice blade ther Fred, I was really trying to cover all of the bases with this knife, being 7/8" wide at the widest point.. I was thinking I could use it for deer processing and for Salmon as well. The Bass in the pic was just something to try and make the pic. a bit more fitting. I can't really show a pic of me butchering a deer since it isn't season. I just fish for Bass for the fight. Now Salmon and Walleye, that is a different story.

I like it. Looks like it would do great as a boning knife and general kitchen duty too. Who knew D2 would flex? That is cool :D

I like the design but I have to agree that it looks a little too wide, at least compared to what I normally use. I have to wonder if you can actually make a knife that would work great at both deer and fish. Maybe asking too much to serve two masters? Still, it's a knife I wouldn't mind owning.

IMO,it really depends on what you are doing, for the blade to be determined,"too wide","too stiff",etc

That knife looks,to me,to be perfect !I really like the guard/fingergroove set up,that gives options for grips.I'd have that baby in my kitchen.Boning, fillet, melons, even carving. The handle looks to be contoured & textured nicely.I prefer 154 CPM in kitchen knives, but currently have only one custom fillet & it is ATS-34,with another smaller one on order,also,ATS-34
The D-2 is great all around cutting steel Very, very nice

For our bass like these :

The mates like stiff blades.

But when the fillets get home,I like a thin ,flexible fillet for trimming the "red" out

they like a big thin blade for skinning

NWA that fillet is awesome, nice job!

I like it -- very nice!

I don't think it matters too much how wide the blade is (within reason of course) as long as there's still flex. It'd work on everything but the smallest of what we catch down here in our Texas lakes...

Nicely done fillet knife!

Who knew D2 would flex?
By the by, all steels have a virtually identical modulus of elasticity. Therefore, the ability to flex is dependent on the blade's thickness, not the type of steel.

Below is a video demo by Tim Zowada that demonstrates this principle.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Thanks for posting that video Chris, that's pretty cool:thumbup:

Vince, great pics man. My son and I caught about 60 Largemouths today. I have to say it was one of our best trips yet. He caught one that measured 19" and weighed 4 lbs. It was a pretty darn nice fish. Average size for the day was about 14"-16". I have a pic of him holding it, the only problem is the pic is on my cell phone and I have no idea how to extract that pic and post it:o

Nick:)

Nick,
Sounds like a great day of fishing.I love the lighter tackle fishing, when I can.
Fantastic fillet knife, too & Thanks for showing it.

Nick,
I prefer a wider blade, and think that turned out great. Love to "test" it on our walleyes here ...

NWA I think it looks GREAT!! Perfect for our South West Ohio Fish & Game, but to make sure send it down here for some R&D Testing:p !! I volunteer to test & report:D the results!!

Thanks guys, and Copperboy, I think you just gave me the name for this one.
"Fish & Game" model....... I like it....:D

Hi T, nope, this one was done in my kiln. Since it's an air harden steel I can't differently heat treat these.

Nick:)

I figured it wasn't, I didn't see the temper line. I'm really digging this model it looks great.

NWA I thank you for choosing the "Fish & Game" for the name of it. I bet it will fillet a Backstrap or strips for Jerky :cool:with the same perfection as a Walleye or a Saugeye & slice potatoes & dice onions for the shore lunch as well! Then lets debone a Rabbit or Pheasant for nuggets. We can also make some thick juicy Steaks & a couple Neck Roast while were at it! We can't forget the catfish fillets & nuggets either. Ok now I made myself hungry & gave my wife every excuse she needs to make me buy her a new knife!:p Gues she wins again :o

Great looking blade. I have forged D2 for blades for a while now. They are a little stiffer but I like them that way.
