I am looking for a fillet knife. Does anyone know of a brand that is equivlent to the quality of a benchmade or spyderco knife. Possibly with an H1 blade. Thnks for the help

Lots of good choices out there...

Rapala knives are never a bad choice as they're made by J. Marttiini in Finland.

My favorite are the Dexter Russell Sani-Safe blades. Made in the US. A popular choice on commercial fishing vessels.

Both are good, production "lots of bang for the buck" choices. Both get razor sharp and hold an edge well.

Some folks also like the Victorinox fillet knives. I've never tried one, but have always meant to pick one up.

To add: Spyderco is the only company I know of that is using H1. I have the Pacific Salt, and I have to say it is great steel in that configuration. I don't know how flexible H1 might be in terms of a fillet knife, but if Spyderco can work out the design and make it functional in that steel, I'd buy two or three.

I do know they're working on at least one or two fixed blade dive knives in H1, but I haven't heard anything about a fillet knife. Here's a 2005 post where Sal seemed to be toying with the idea:

I have the Benchmade Salmon Creek knife, I do like it, but the sliding lock mechanism is giving me problems. It sticks, and is sometimes very hard to manipulate it.
As mentioned, the Rapala knives can be found at any sporting goods store, and are inexpensive.
As also mentioned, my favorite is the Dexter Russell Sani-Safe line. They run $20 to $25 apiece, and are definitely top quality. I have the 6" boning, the 7" fillet, and the 9" scalloped utility knife.
I have yet to meet a fish tougher than my Dexter knives!:D

Gerber doesn't make a half bad fillet knife.

Busse?

You might consider the ones made by Frosts of Sweden. If you like good ole carbon steel the Cold Steels are pretty popular.

One of the biggest fillet knife mistakes I ever made was buying my father a Microtech Black Marlin. Being the knife guy in the family, I'm kinda the designated sharpener. he recently gave it to me to sharpen after about three years of halibut, salmon, chips, gouges and "quick, dirty sharpenings" on drag thru style sharpeners. FRUSTRATION!!!!!!!  Never will I buy another fillet knife with some kinda super steel again. I'll buy the cheap ones and if they don't sharpen back real quick, I'll throw the darn thing out and buy a new one. Not that big of a deal when you consider the cost of fishing anyways.

Dexter-russell has a huge selection - stiff or flexible ,and many lengths.I still use my old Rapalas.

I don't think you can go wrong with either a Dexter Russell or a Rapala. I've cleaned a lot of fish with both brands.
