well i went to go see my buddy the sheath/saddle maker and he gave me some stainless steel knives to mess with. one of them was a round tip bread knife. well i drilled out the pins in it and reshaped it and made me a fillet knife. handle is green canvas micarta and 3/8" brass pins held together with devcon 2 ton epoxy. i must have spent hours on the handle to make it just perfect. there is not a defect in the shaping of it. check it out and tell me what you think. oh and i hand sanded to 1200.

dang man... that looks nice!
i see where you cut yourself... CLUTZ!!!
haha i did it yesterday.

my only gripe is that there are no close-ups.

well like i had mentioned to you my camera batteries were dead so i had to use my cell phone again. ill charge up the batteries tonight and then when i get a chance tomorrow ill post closeups.

well fine! be that way...
i say you should go out and buy new batteries right NOW!
sheesh... young whippersnapper

you forget im your older brother. HEHEHEHE!!!! dont make me go tell Daddy IG on you. you want me to tell him what you did in his room the other day? :D:D:jerkit::D:D

first thing my eyes saw was the pin spacing ummm not sure what the las pin is all but off the handle but so be it
other then that not a bad shot at it get some better pictures and get alittle more feed back

i didnt get a chance to charge up the batteries last night so when i go into town i will pick up some. the reason why that last pin is where it is was because i had planned to make the handle a little bit longer but after playing around with it, it just didnt feel right.

yes very flexible. it tapers nicely too. im thinking about taking my pole with me and get some bait and goto the river to catch some dinner just so i can test it out. :D hopefully i can catch me a nice big cat.

Nice job, man.
I worked with micarta today. It is the most stinky material to work with. Next time I will use wood. While I'm shaping the micarta scales - all turns into nasty, sticky, smelly dust. I am using my hollow grinder and a Dremell like tool for shaping. Files too.

Dunk it in water and it keeps the dust down the gunk off does not do much for the smell.....a good cure for the smell is some desert iron wood:D

"Micarta handle?
wear a mask."

I used to read such advice to always wear a mask when working with micarta but I never listened.
I sanded it, I filed it, I never had a mask on while doing so and it was no big deal.

Then one day I noticed my nose was coated in ugly black micarta dust that I was breathing.
I didnt like to think about what my lungs might look like.
I then later noticed in a shaft of sunlight entering the shop from the window that the air in the shop was filled with million, no make that Zillions of tiny threads of micarta from the sander.

Now I always wear a mask and have the door open and a fan sucking the dust out....

I am using mask. I can feel the smell with my mask on. And when I finish and remove it the whole room stink bad. Even with windows opened. I have walnut board to make handles. Thanks for advice, Spencer.

ok just got back from fishing and am cooking the fish right now as i type this. took better photos of the knife now that i got batteries and also of my catch. remember i live alone so i didnt bring hime much.

you should have seen the blood from my battle scar. and to top it off i didnt even try to clean or cover the wound. i just kept going. i know i should be punched for it but that "little" cut didnt affect me at all. ive had worse and still did the same thing. HEHEHEHE!!!! :D hows that for better pics?

Spencer, you think micarta is bad on smell? try working with antler!!! :D

Man, I like the handle shape. Good job.

thanks. ok no one ever told me taht gar had such thick scales and that its a pain to try and cut thru them. its easier to cut thru a snake than it is a gar. but it was tasty!!! HEHEHE!!!! :D now taht i got to play with the knife some i still need to make a better one. atleast now i know how to work the handle. it felt so comfortable.

I have fished all my life,in fact the boat is loaded and going again in the morning crappie spawn is on-- never seen nobody eat gar!! do you texas people barbeque or what?? Next you be telling us possum is good. hehe

it wasnt taht bad actually. and that was with no spices. just wrapped in foil, scales and all, and then cooked. thought about pouring in some guinness in with it but wanted to see what it tasted like without seasonings. next time ill add guinness and pepper. maybe a little garlic. you should try it sometime. its not that bad. i have heard of people eating them before. next time i go fishing for them ill make sure to get a bigger one. only bad thing is that full grown i might need a chainsaw to cut it open. HEHEHEHE!!!! might go bowfishing for them sometime. also want to try noodling for cats sometime.
