Filleting for survival

The Lodge factory is here in TN, and I've bought some of their "seconds" at the factory outlet for a lot less than retail. Usually just amounts to a pit or two. Sometimes hard to tell the firsts from the seconds.

I'm going to have to stop in next time I'm down that way and price that little grill. It's called the Sportsman Grill.

Oh, and I like fillet knives too. I've added three more since this pic. :p

3rd from the left. Is that a Busse fillet knife? If so, I need one!:D

I have a Schrade (USA) Fillet about 15years old and I had Nick (NWA) build me one from D2 and it is awesome, can not wait for spring time fishing ! Great thread:thumbup:

I've been wanting to buy a Laguiole pocket knife for my pack fly rod kit, for a long time. I can feel it getting closer ... any thoughts on it?

I've always said a fillet knife is one of the required knives in any collection.

How I wish for a Phil Wilson, or a Dozier in S30V!

My KOA steelheader and Cub Bear are always close at hand. The Cub is small but is a fantastic Bird and Trout knife.
I wonder if we can talk Bryan Breeden into making a fillet knife with some Blaze orange scales and O1...:)

i'm pretty sure that flexibility and corrosion resistance is fairly important in a fillet knife.

Are you saying S30V will not do? The fish will not know the difference! ;)

I mineral oil my fillet knives every time I use them so corrosion resistance is secondary.
Does O1 in a thin enough blade not have the flexibility? I haven't had a thin O1 blade. I'd like to know.

I think thin O1 will flex plenty well for filleting. Personally, I don't like a ton of flex even in my fillet knives.

All my fishing is around fresh water, so I don't worry much about corrosion. After leaving a few O1 knives lay around soaked in blood etc. for a couple hours while butchering deer, I'm not too worried about the half hour or so it might take me to do a limit of fish. Once you get a good patina going on O1 it isn't that bad as far as corrosion goes.

it was mostly speculation on my part. just thinking that since S30V is very hard and has a tendency to chip out that it might not be flexible enough. of course heat treat and the thinness of the blade has a lot to do with that... as for the O1, i wasn't thinking about it living in a kitchen drawer, i was thinking about it living on a boat or in a fisherman's pack... like i said, i was speculating. take it FWIW...

The vikings managed without stainless.
I think a modern angler could handle it as well.
Used my Sharpfinger saltwater fishing for years and it is no worse for wear.

I only have a couple filet knives. They don't really appeal to me as much as other knives. Although I do buy a new one almost every time I go fishing in the summer. (Becasue I "forget" my filet knife, of course)
