This is one of my favorite knives, but until today I don't have any information about the maker.
It caught my eye about a year ago because it reminded me of the beloved Remington R-1306 Bullet. :)
It is marked "FILLINGER" over "GALLIPOLIS, OHIO" and the pile side liner is stamped "MADE IN 1990".
The knife is extremely well built with great attention to detail. It has a very solid lock-up and a very nicely hollow ground blade (although the original Remington was flat ground I think).
Who knows anything about the maker? There must be more "Fillingers" out there but I never ran across another one.

Thanks in advance,
Peter

I hope this is the right place to post this question - if not, Mods please move it!

That's a beauty. I see some links in google that may be worth checking.

Wonderful scales on that knife!

Indeed that is very nice. I'm hoping you can find out some more about the maker and let us know what you find out. - Ed

Thank you all for your help. Yes, it is indeed a very fine knife with really impressive F&F. I looked it up I got it in February 2009.

We already found out his first name "Greg" :)
Even if Mr. Fillinger wasn't with us any more he must have made more than two knives (counting the one from Ranger1 on the "For Sale Forum" from 2005)

I forgot to show the other side of the handle - they match perfectly!

Wow, that's a great knife! Beautiful stag... and check out how many pins are holding it on!!!

i'm sorry to say but it looks like this maker must have passed. anyone with that much talent would'nt just quit.

That would be my thought as well -- everything about that knife screams quality and professional attention to detail. I think if he was around for long making knives - even on a very limited part time basis - with product like this, he would be known.

I managed to contact the seller that I had bought the knife from in Feb.09.

He was so kind to let me know:

"I only know that he does not make knives any longer. He was a part-time maker for a short period of time. It is a shame, as his knives are great. I have this as second hand information from some knife dealers. I was told he sold those "Bullet" type knives for $50.00-$100.00 20 years ago! What a bargain! I too only saw one other knife listed on ebay quite a while ago. I believe it was in Europe. Hope this helps.

Thanks,"

So this is roughly what we expected - except the prices
I must say I would love to get another one of his knives - it's simply too nice :)
Maybe we can find out some additional information.

Best,

Anyway I look at it, I like the knife even though most of the time I prefer flat grinds on my folders. Just never got to know the maker.

Hawkeye,

thanks for helping here - that is good news!
Do you think he is still making knives? Do you know if he made other patterns as well?

I love mine. It is so well made. If you see him it would be nice to let him know :)

Thank you,
Peter

Thanks for the information, I know Jim Downs pretty well, I'll have to ask him about Mr. Fillinger. I've heard of many of the knifemakers in Ohio, but never heard of Fillinger.
