Fillmore Cut. Co. shadow jack. Early Robeson

That is just a gem of a knife. Some real cutlery history there:thumbup::thumbup: Thanks for sharing this one.

That's the nicest Fillmore I've ever seen.

It's generally accepted that Millard Fillmore Robeson imported knives from England, Germany and Austria between 1876 and the mid 1890's, stopping that practice after passage of the tariffs in 1890 and when he contracted for domestic manufacture by Sherwood in Camillus, New York.

I have one little Fillmore as a representative example. I plucked it off Ebay many moons ago.

Thanks Charlie,
This ones got made in Austria on the pile side tang on the master blade. The jigging is like a rope pattern or something. I think I've seen this jigging on other Robesons if my memory serves me. Yours looks like its in great shape also. Is that horn or ebony? The date on your website says 1891-1895 for this tang stamp. Do you think it's older?

I've seen one other Austria marked Fillmore.

The dates I quote are from Tom Kalcevic's Knives Can Talk!.

Given the country of origin being on the knife, I assume 1891 to be the earliest possible date.

Robeson's connection to Sherwood has been quoted by multiple sources as 1894 or 95.

My little knife might be horn, but I've always thought it to be smooth black composition.

That is a great looking knife. That shield is awesome, and goes great with with the covers.
