Filson Coat?

Get the first coat. I have one very similar and love it. Have had it for about 6-7 years and have abused the thing and it still is great.
Filson's warranty is amazing as well.

Yep Filson products are outstanding. I have the Mackinaw cruiser, and bought a double Mackinaw cruiser. I just wanted it for extreme cold when elk hunting and going to Alaska. I was in some very cold conditions and it was a good thing the outer layer could be removed, because even at 10 - 15 degrees below zero, I was way to warm. The sales lady tried telling me that, but I didn't listen :D

how does it do if you get caught in the rain?

I saw the double mackinaw but it looks like its probably too warm, it's extreme.

have you tried any of their other stuff? like the belts?

I wore a Filson Cruiser oilskin jacket until it finally fell apart after about ten years (my wife called it my 'Filthy Cruiser' because it eventually turned black). It kept me dry on British Columbia's notorious 'wet coast', and just as important protected me from savage Devil's Club lacerations in the thick brush. Great product. Also had the hat, which my fellow hikers laughed at... until it started to rain.

I have the Timberline and it is warm, waterproof and one of the best made products out there

I've never worn the double in rain, just snow. It really is for very extreme cold. If you think you may be in extreme weather conditions, it may be worth while to get the double Mac, because you can remove the outer shell when its not needed.

The nice thing about Wool is, even if it does gets wet, you will still stay warm

Anyone have any experience with Filson's coats?

Yes, the Shelter Cloth Packer Coat. I purchased one in the mid nineties and used it mostly on horse back. The region I used it in was Central California, rain but not very extreme cold.
It was a great coat as far as being tough and keeping the rain out, sort of a home away from home. The only down side was that it was heavy and some what rigid from the waxed 8.5-oz. cloth. When I hiked, or hunted on foot I usually left it behind because I had lighter and warmer options. I gave it away a few years ago because I wasn't riding much any more and that's what the coat was best for. I've been thinking about getting another Filson lately and I'm considering the Foul Weather Coat in their lighter 6-oz. cover cloth.

I have a Mac in hunter green, it's about 8 yrs old. I also have the hat, the hat has been used a bunch. I also have the vest, it's been used alot. The coat is too large for me, I'm slender. Therefore, I can't really say that the jacket is that warm, cause too much air comes up underneath. The material and construction are awesome.

I like my Shelter Cloth Waterfowl Upland coat for light activity in wet weather. I wear a 1/4 zip fleece underneath for added warmth if needed. I never wear this coat for fast hiking or similar activities as it doesn't breath all that well. But it is VERY well made and great for what it was designed for.

I have two Filson coats: Double Mac and a shelter cloth "work coat". The Double Mac is an incredible coat... have to wait until it's in the teens or colder though. The shelter cloth coat is unlined, the newer models have the capability to have three different levels of zip in liners. It cuts the wind exceptionally well.

I also have two wool vests, very stylish yet very warm and thin. I usually wear one of them nearly every day once it starts getting cool.

Belts? Absolutely incredible. I have the double thickness belt and it's indestructable.

Hats... have about a dozen of them.

Sweaters... have one light weight one that is also a frequently worn favorite, and would love to have one of the heavy weight ones.

The ONLY Filson product that I've ever had that didn't care for was their socks... got a couple pair when they first came out, and didn't care for the way they fit. May have improved by now, but Smart Wool are just as good, if not better.

If I had tons of money, I'd go ape-shit buying up their entire catalogue and go move somewhere colder!

I ordered a belt, still not committed on a coat choice. I really like the idea of a wool coat, maybe ill just find a good umbrella for rain and go with that.

Kinda disappointing quite a few products are imported - like the boots.

Yes, but even the imported items are still of very high quality. I have owned several pieces of their clothing and even though some were U.S. made and some were imported I really could not tell a difference in quality.

Boots... forgot to mention them, I have one pair of boots... I think they are called the Uplander. Absolute top notch construction! Also have one pair of the shoes... also great. I like the cork foot beds, I'd get an extra pair to rotate.

Wore my double Mac tonight, was very glad to be wearing it... outside for two hours at a Christmas tree sale our church is doing. Nice and toasty warm!

I don't think there is any extra layer TO take off, it's just a double layer of thick wool... makes it that much warmer and more wind resistant.

My Double Mac had a separate outer shell that could be removed by undoing the buttons. I bought it quite a few years ago though, so maybe they are different now.

I got a Double Mac Cruiser a few weeks back and the second layer cannot be removed as it is sewn into the body of the coat. A couple family members back home in Oregon have the single and really like them. Filson's wool is just fine of you get caught in the rain for a bit but there are better choices if you are going to be rained on for extended periods of time in my opinion. I wear the Alaskan guide shirts most of the fall and winter. They are the best shirts I've ever had, though the sleeves run a bit shorter than those of other brands I've worn.

I've got a few of their wool items. A coat, jacket, and vest. All are top quality and you'll probably be able to pass them down to your children. All of mine were bought new, with tags, heavily discounted at a popular auction site.
