I have the single Makinaw and find it's a great weight for 25 degree on up into the 40s. A lot of folks seem to forget these garments are sized a bit large for proper layering. If you fit it too tight, there is no warm layer of air and the insulation factor is diminished. I wear a size 44 suit coat and bought accordingly from Filson. My single Mack has a little room to spare which lets me wear a sweater or even a light down vest without feeling like a sausage. Toasty warm. Here's my spin: If you want to get a lot of outdoor AND urban wear out of your Filson, get the single. If you truly are looking for an OUTDOOR, woodsy garment, spring for the double. I think the double is awesome but you'll look like you fell off the lumber truck while you order that latte. The single just looks sharp no matter what you wear it with. Colors? I went with the dark green. Works with jeans, khakis and cords. I'm not down with the Larry, Darryl and Darryl look of the plaid.
