How does everyone work their final plunges...do you grind them pre or post heat treat, right from the start or after you have finished grinding the knife completely? Do you change grits and cut them in with a finer grit when your doing your finish grinding? Just curious!

I form my plunges while I grind the bevels. A trick that I learned from David Sharp is to round the edges of my contact wheels and platens to get a nice rounded plunge.

Thats not a bad idea...I notice on mine one side is slightly more square than the other and it takes a little more time to even them out.

Excellent advise. Just take a hand file up and down each side of the platen to round them a bit. When using a very flexable belt it makes your plunge that much nicer.

I also form my plunge as I work the grind up the blade. One simple thing I do to help me keep it where I want is to put a piece of tape right on the line. I tried a file guide and it just didn't work for me but the tape did.
