Final update! She's done! TT Zilla rehandle WIP ( aka, The Sweetness)

Jroden those handles look amazing! I am going to have to try something like this.. do they make the blade feel different? are they heavier or lighter or the same as the micarta handles?

That's a great job you did and comes with the satisfaction of making them yourself. That is beautiful wood.

Great job J  The benefit of having a set of grips which are a bespoke fit for your hand really shows itself when doing a large chopping session ...

I have a KZII which I would love to do a custom set of grips for ... I want it to have that "locked in" ability on the grip that you get with the TTKZ design ...

Thanks man! Feel free to pm or email me with any questions about doing it yourself you might have, glad to help if I can, I couldn't do this of anyone other than myself, to much pressure and it makes it not fun
That's understandable. I'll definitely send you a PM when I have the free time to take on a project like this.

Nice job brother! THat took some nerve and even more skill:)

Its hard to say if it's any heavier, the wood is a bit thicker than the g10 that was on there, the grip now is much more comfortable and hand filling so it feels like I have more control over the blade, I have to put it to some real use to know for sure

That was one of the reasons I wanted to do them myself, I could shape them exactly to my comfort level. So far, I'm loving the new grip, we will see after a bit of hard use

Thanks T! And thanks everyone for the kind words! The scariest part is popping off the handles, after that it's no turning back

Whats the plan for finish? Just continue on with the tung oil? I found tung oil finishes attract dirt over time and get icky lookin.

Hmm, I hadn't heard that but now I'll have to look into it, I may try the boiled linseed oil/ lacquer / thinner mix and a coat of wax, thanks for that bit of info

Tung takes forever to fully cure (un-polymerized) so unless you can wait a couple of months it might get gummy when you sweat. YMMV of course. My hands pour out acid whenever I touch anything haha. A few coats of wax after the tung should do the trick, its how Im doin my handles and it smells good too!

Interesting, I appreciate the first hand info, what kind of wax do you recommend?

Wow. Nice job. That Redwood looks like pieces of Wagyu beef!

How do you think the wood will hold up with hard use?

Chris.

Thanks, yeah, I love the Burl on this piece of redwood, as far as how it will hold up, I guess we will see, stabilized wood seems to be pretty tough, but if it fails then I'll probably go micarta, but we shall see

Man, that turned out really freaking sweet

Now it just needs the JRoden custom shop logo :D ;)

Here's a few pics of the finished product, got a chance to use her a bit today, clearing brush in the rain, didn't slip at all, super pleased with it
