Hello yall, well after hunting atleast 18 cherry burls over the last 3 years , I finally found one that I feel is a keeper ( atleast to me). I usually get burls that -if im lucky ill get 3-4 solid pieces with ok to good figure. The rest of the burl is full of voids and bug hole brittle/spongy crap.Well this one yielded about 10 good blocks. The blocks are all solid ( except for a bit of cleanup with the sander that i still need to touch up) and have descent figure. I enjoyed the fact that the sap wood was burled to. Now time to seal and dry for a few years. Thanks For looking--Mark

You sure thats cherry burl? Looks like persimmons to me...:p

Just kidding....that stuff looks great .. What are you sealing with?

Larry

Im sure-the Georgia buckeye persimmon burl is exclusive and well guarded. Thanks Mark-- shhhh gave away the secret!!!!

Wait a minute was this that stuff that was found under a magician's bed and is soooo hard its almost petrified ??? :p

What size are those blocks in the pics? Theres some really nice color in there.

Larry

Larry most of them are approx 2 x 1 3/4 x 7 or so-the wood the burl was odd shaped -so rather than lose the 2" i left it on. Then there are some that are 2x1 1/8 x 5, and the smaller ones would be good for mixed wood handles. thanks-mark

Anyone have trouble stabilizing cherry burl?? does anchor seal or parrifen make stabilization more difficult ( ofcourse i would scrape off the wax....) I never did go into specifs with my mentor about that--seems silly, since its practically the first step after the cutting----thanks -Mark

I am guessing that it isn't cherry burl. Pretty sure it is Athens B52 Burl.
Beautiful burl. A lot of work but worth the effort. A lot of people don't realize how much work and how much waste can involved in getting a few little pieces.

I have never had any problem with stabilizing it. Sand the wax away and send it off. I have sent a couple batches to WSSI with great results. There is a recent knife I made in the gallery with Cherry Burl like this.

Burton--the knife you made was beautiful. The cherry burl was outstanding,I been trying to find really good figured burl for a while. People dont realize how hard it is to get HIGHLY FIGURED CHERRY BURL.--thanks-mark

Thanks Marekz. I wish I had more but I have a decent stash. I just spotted a nice big Cherry burl the other day. The problem is it is in a nature preserve so I will just have to drool every time I visit the place.

I spotted an oak burl about the size of a small toyota pick up truck. Ill get some pics the next time i go through there. The place is called twin oaks ( subdivision kinda place) well one of the oaks fell over into the big pond ( or small lake). So to get at it would take some heavy machinery-since its partly submerged and out about 15 ft into the boggy muddy big pond. Now if that was a desert ironwood burl ( and legal) - im sure i would figure out a way to bring it home..( i know they dont grow that big).lol-Mark

Do not wax the whole block..just the ends. If you seal it all off it cannot dry well. In this humid climate it will dry slow any way. Waxing a whole piece is a seller's trick to keep wet, green wood from cracking until it gets to the end consumer..then it will crack when the wax is removed :)

Apparently you did not see the solid cherry burl turning blocks at BLADE?
