Finally, a Spyderco with ELMAX!

My point was, this knife should be a lot cheaper than the SR-1, seeing as it's not milled from a single block of titanium (which should reduce production cost drastically). This knife is a more traditional titanium framelock on one side and a G10 scale on the other.
It's likely (althought not certain) that Elmax is more expensive than Sleipner but certainly not by much, the blade steel alone cannot explain the cost.
The only thing I can think of is that the Euro is expensive compared to the US dollar, raising production cost.

The US dollar is performing bad :(

Its really only about $50 more than the aluminum SR-1, for that price you get Ti framelock, weight saving G10 scale and Elmax steel (over D2).

It also costs $100 less than the Ti version with Sleipner steel.

Add to that that now two production companies will have to make money on it, plus transport to the US, plus European labor, plus a weak dollar.

I'll bet you the profit margins on this thing is pretty tight to get it in your hands for ~$300

The G10 bit made me laugh, you have a gift for turning a minus into a plus! ;) They should have made the entire knife out of G10! :D
But I agree with you mostly, Spyderco adding their own cost won't help. Transport would be the same for either knife though. And I still feel that what makes the SR-1 unique (milled from a single block of metal) is also what makes it expensive, particularly in the case of titanium.
The LionSpy is still worth the money though, IMHO. I own a Ti SR-1 and much prefer a thumbstud so I won't be buying one, but I have no doubt it is a great folder.

union work is more expensive

Not feeling this knife... If they reduced the cost to $200-250, then I think id buy it. With the upcoming of the ZT 0560/0561 that will have a price point of around $260, with a flipper, Ti framelock, 3D machined g10 and Titanium, KVT bearing system and ELMAX, it's going to be tough IMO for the LionSpy if they are going to sell for $320. Id love to see the Elmax on a Para 2 or a Military.

I was mostly serious though, I've handled both the Lion Spy, the Ti SR-1 and the aluminum SR-1, the Ti SR-1 is a REALLY heavy knife. Weight wise I would go for the aluminum SR-1, but the Lion Spy is a very nice compromise between the two and pretty much in the middle price wise. I also like the spyderhole over thumbstuds anyday.

As I said, I will bet you the profit margin on this knife is a lot tighter than a lot of other Spyderco offerings in order to get this street price.

The Lion Spy is really nice, I will definitely get one and I'm not a fan of big pocket knives, but this thing feels amazing.

As much as I would love to have one there's probably not one in my future. For less than the original retail cost of the LionSpy I can get an S90V Para 2 on the secondary market. I would have preferred to pay the full SR-1 price and get the fully milled Ti knife, because that's what attracted me to the SR-1 in the first place.

I think I understand what you're saying but those two knives really have very little in common. If you're in the market for a folder the size and bulk of the LionSpy, a Para 2 will never even be on the horizon. And vice versa.

My point was that for less than the regular retail cost of this knife I could buy a much desired and relatively rare sprint run on the secondary market. I wasn't comparing the two in terms of features. For most practical purposes you could think of the LionSpy as a ZT 0301 with a round hole opener and an Elmax blade. That's a more accurate comparison to me.

Hello,

I like it a lot but the price is a little to much for me;-( Is this knife made 100% by Lion steel or is spyderco making the blade and shipping it to Italy?

Thanks,

Chris

That would make a great sprint run. I would like a Para 2 in Elmax.

I like it but it costs too much for me. Also the upcoming blue M390 Para 2 is actually made with better performing steel, at least according to Bohler's own steel testing chart. M390 was slightly better in edge retention than Elmax. So the M390 Para 2 at ~$180 plus shipping seems like a more reasonable option, at least for me.

I sure do like the look of that knife though. If only it was ~$200 or so, I'd probably go for it.

The price seems reasonable to me, especially with the Euro vs. the Dollar. Also, while M390 might hold an edge a little longer, Elmax is supposed be significantly tougher. That seems like a plus for such a hard use folder. I'm just not sure I'm keen on the design, the blade seems to be very blunt and the knife looks like it would feel like a brick in hand.

This is all just speculation though. Spyderco has so many interesting knives coming out in the near future, I feel like people can be a bit choosy. Too many knives is a problem you wanna have :)
