Congrats!

You mentioned able to do so with guided system, now freehand it is .. I guess you won't go back to guided system? :D

Oh I will never quit using the edge pro. This was more of an experiment just to see if I could do it.

how long did it take you to get this edge? faster then using an edge pro?

Much slower, probably because I had to pay close attention to each stroke I made, on each stone. Not to mention stropping.

It is still very fun to test your own skill. Doesn't take long to get good if you work slowly and pay close attention.

Not completely freehand since you set the bevel with your edge pro, but congratulations. :)

Very true. I don't have any stones course enough to set the bevel with yet, although I have some on the way.

Unit made me an adjustable wedge for stones, it should be here soon. I am really looking forward to using it.

Edit: Here is what he made me.

Stones went up to UF. (sharpmaker stone) And the strop was loaded with green compound, no clue what grit/micron size that is.

Thanks! :)

ususally green compound is CrO 0.5 micron isn't it? There are a lot of different green compounds though.

I saw that wedge he made; it looks really handy.

What stones did you get?

Spyderco double stuff, then the 303UF, and I have to order a DMT continuous extra course when I find a place that sells it.

That's good to know. I want to get some diamond spray.

I want to get some diamond spray.

that stuff is much more accurate as far as grit size goes and it goes much lower then the green compounds do. probally last forever as well if it doesnt get contaminated with metal from your knifes. http://www.lapidarymachines.com/polishes.shtml 200,000 grit (1/8 micron) for only 15 bucks haha. Never used it myself. should be intresting if you can tell the difference though. Time to get a microscope with 200-400X zoom to tell the difference since you have exhausted most physical tests for sharpness.

Ahh thanks for reminding me! I have been wanting one of those microscopes for a while, just forgot about it.

How do you freehand on the sharpmaker stones? You used the SM as a benchstone?

CTS, you are going full throttle into free hand sharpening! Good to see.

I hope you find it as fulfilling as I do. Sounds like you are getting some good equipment also. The DMT stones have done me well, that XC cuts pretty quickly (I think you will like it).

I really enjoyed your video...I can TOTALLY relate to the frustrations of trying to capture that on video.
