Just bought some Kydex, some Chicago Screws, and A heatgun and I want to try my hand at sheath making. I have a design in my head for an IWB folder carrier

It seems there are a couple schools of thought, some people like to use a foam lined "press" others like to hand fourm the kydex, should I make or buy a Press or should I try hand forming first?

Also What temp works best for kydex, the gun I bought has many settings?

Lastly, Can I use strictly Chicago Screws, or do I need Rivets and a press?

Chiro...I really like that tutorial

couple of questions if ya dont mind

1...where are you getting those screws nd what size are they??

2...do you use a jig for your belt loop?? I really like the design you are using and I am really getting tired of buying belt loops!

Thanks

Hey, guys, I fug through Quickbooks today and found that I wrote a check to MicroFasteners a while ago. That's probablu where I got those screws. The URL is: http://www.microfasteners.com/

I don't see them listed, but I probably emailed them and asked. I think I spent under $10 on 100, probably.

chiro75's sheath press is a great model. I built mine similar but have a c clamp to clamp it together.

sorry to raise this one from the dead but i had a relevant question.

Where and what size chicago screws do you guys buy. I'll be putting together 2 layers of .08 as well as attaching belt loops. What size to hold the sheath together and what size for the attachment points?

Also, can you flare those rivets with a screw head or do you actually need the flaring die?

The link chiro posted for fasteners looks promising but i wanted to know what sizes to ask for before i sent an email off.

I think I always bought 3/16" long posts. Sometimes I'd grind or cut the ends off. I never used more than 1/4" long posts, and that was great for the material (two layers, of course), clip (one layer of material) and those rubber washers as spacers between the clip and sheath.

Any clue what the thread size was? How about the screw length for 2 layer vs. 3 layer plus washer?

Thanks.

I contacted microfasteners.com and they said they dont have anything like that. Any other suggestions for sourcing chicago screws?

I have been looking also. Knifekits.com has them for about $39/100. They don't seem to be cheap. I think Texasknife charges $.50 a screw.

I've spent a couple hours looking for these silly things, and the best i could come up with (that werent plastic) are from mcmaster carr.

91772A103 4-40 thread 18-8 stainless, 1/8 inch long pan head machine screw $3.75/100

91772A105 4-40 thread 18-8 stainless, 3/16 long pan head machine screw, $3.01/100

90975A002 plain steel, zinc plated, 1/8in barrel height, .36" diameter base, 3 prong 4-40 thread tee-nut $8.19/100

I didnt order any chicago screws from knifekits because i figured it would be easy enough to get them cheap somewhere else, lol.

Flatten out the prongs on these tee-nuts and they should do the job. Any body have/use these guys? Are these things just going to suck and make unprofessional looking sheaths? My comp-tac kydex holster uses larger 3-prong tee-nuts (0.6" diameter base) with .095 kydex and they look pretty good.

edit: the screws listed are philips head, would slotted be a better choice?
