Ok, I've had the knife hobby for some time and always turned my nose up at Spyderco knives. Don't know if it was the unique looks with the large thumb hole or the feeling they were nothing special, everybody has 'em dime a dozen thoughts I had. Well, for some reason out of nowhere they started to speak to me. It's the time of year I usually have some coin hidden, so I treated myself to two pieces to look over and see if they stick with me. First incomming is a Delica 4 with the ZDP-189. I got one off the forums for a song to see if I like it. The second is (what I think) a very cool sprint run Manix 2 that I can't believe was still around for me to score:

The Manix 2 comes with the FFG, and since I am looking for and have also heard the spydies are in fact great slicers, it may be the one that sticks with me. either way I look forward to comparing the quality of the Manix to my XM-18s.

I'm really looking forward to them!

I use to hate spydercos too. They just never appealed to me. One day I saw a white frn Endura sprint run and fell in love with it. I bought it, and shortly after bought another spyderco. After that, there was no going back and the spyderco collection continues to grow to this day.

Congrats on getting your foot in the door. Now you have to determine what you think of them.

Still waiting on my Orange M2s. Been well over a month since I paid for them and I'm getting a little impatient for these suckers to arrive, lol. The manix-2 would make a great first spyderco.

...Interesting...I ordered mine earlier today and already have a package with tracking number:confused:

I was originally turned off by their looks. The regular Manix 2 was my first... now I have the orange one and a sage 2... definitely need the other two sages now... and a dragonfly... and a salt somethin...

Not only do the sprint run versions of the manix 2 have the FFG blade, better steel, and cool G10 colors, they also have milled out liners which make them almost a full ounce lighter!

...Boy, I know what's coming for me and it ain't pretty. I ordered a catalog from Spyderco moments before my first post.

Haha, wow. I preordered two of them in October, paid on the first of December and they only shipped out about a week ago. Maybe they just forgot?

It is a brand that needs time to grow on you and some use to show its utilitarian prowess. That's probably why they're so popular among knife enthusiasts but not so among sheeple and NKP. I still think I like thumb studs better, though.

I waited years to buy my first Spyderco and it was a paramilitary CPMD2. dozens later I'm sold. I "thought" I preferred thumb studs until I experienced how effective a 14mm hole is.

I've never had a better working knife than my Delica4 I used to take it even over my 110, and I'd bet others would agree. Once you get over the strange look of most Spydercos, some can't, you will probably appreciate just how well they work. Not usually the most bombproof blade shapes toughness wise, but almost always the best cutters in their class, usually with the most reliable locks to boot. Should be interesting to see how a manix stacks up against an XM18, looking forward to your impression of it! :)

Well as I type I have officially become a Spyderco owner. Next to me on the nightstand is a Delica4 in ZDP 189 and a Manix2 Sprint run in orange G-10.

First the Delica. It came sharper than any knife out of the box and has a very nice sure, solid lock up. No perceptible blade play which is impressive to me given its light weight. It will be staying with me for a while.

The Manix is a strange report. I really like the size and weight (the machined liners really helped here). All the other ergos on the knife are great as well, jimping is "tacky" and the polished clip really sets the knife off. Problem is it feels very flimsy and cheap. Blade play is sloppy and the knife has a very "light duty" feel about it. Comparing it to my 3" or 3.5" XM-18 is almost laughable. This notwithstanding, the blade is a nice slicer.

Based on these two examples, I will be stopping at 2 Spyderco's and will probably sell one.

Weird, my Manix 2 has very little side to side blade play but isn't noticeable unless you grab the tip of the blade and put a fair amount of pressure on it. Also, the "cheap/weak" feeling might be because of how light it is? Mine is pretty light in hand but it does still feel strong IMO.

All I can say is don't handle a knife like ZT or Hinderer...much more solid than the Manix. The knife does seem very light for it's size. The Delica, by contrast, actually feels to be a more solid (albeit it smaller) knife to me. After receiving the knife, did some searching to see if it was only me and found this:

The knife has some redeeming traits; enough that it won't be an immediate catch and release...but I am surprised.

FWIW the Orange Manix 2 is the first of the Manix 2's to get the updated ball bearing design that does not have the flaw in that video. The problem has been fixed. Also, if you're doing that while actually using a knife, you don't deserve to own one.

Both of my Orange M2's have quite a bit of blade play, side-to-side. Makes me a bit sad. :(

It's a shame, because my 154CM M2 didn't have any whatsoever out of the box (although it did develop some after a fair bit of abuse).

Those are my sediments also. I don't think the knife was designed for that type of treatment. I like my sprint run Manix 2 just fine. It's a nice solid slicer. I don't intend to use it as an axe so I should be good. Comparing it to an xm-18 that cost 3x as much is like comparing apples to oranges.

More like 5-6 times as much. Aren't most XM-18s going for like $600+?

I have the blue g10/s30v and foliage green g10/cts-xhp manix 2's but are very solid and have no blade play what so ever, possibly just a problem with that particular sprint?
