I finally decided to go ahead start building a small wheel attachment for my grinder. I have most of everything ready to cut/weld/put together, but before I go any further, I need to figure out the actual wheel!

A buddy gave me a chunk of small hydraulic hose to try. But Im not too sure of what the correct material would be to use? A few local hardware stores have neoprene. Anyone turn me to the right direction for the type of rubber/hose to use?

This was the route I took. Not the only way to skin the cat.

If you go to page 10 on this link, you'll see that part no. "4" is a 5 piece rubber drum replacement set for the Harbor Fright 69257 Oscillating Spindle Sander. That'll get you a 3/4", 1", 1 1/2", 2", and 3". I think when I got mine, the 3" wasn't part of the set. They fit well on 1/2" rod with a little sealant. You're on your own for anything smaller. I think when I ordered it years ago it was less than $15 shipped to my door. I have no idea what price increases may have happened since then.

Thanks. I looked them up and seems HF doesn't sell that set anymore. I'll search for others though because that seems more legit then rubber hose.

If they truly aren't available, I think that I found a Delta set when I was looking.....more money, but whatcha gonna do?

Went a different route with my small wheel. I use two closely mounted pillow blocks on a tooling arm and swap out small wheel shafts for size changes. Using the entire 4 or 4 1/2" piece lets me run weird sized belts when it's cost-effective to do so on my Frankengrinder.

I found the 3/4" Delta drum on ebay for $9.99 shipped. May just try that. Have to figure out a way to attach it to a 5/16 shaft.

Just a suggestion, but you can buy neoprene blocks in many sizes. Turn your shafts to the needed shoulders, etc. Drill out the block for the shaft size and epoxy it in the block. Turn this on the lathe to get a perfect round of the desired size.

I finally found the links where I purchased sanding drums for my small wheel attachment.

#822304 Drum Sanding 3/4" ($3.99): http://www.ereplacementparts.com/drum-sanding-p-161624.html

#822304-1 Drum Sanding 1" ($3.99): http://www.ereplacementparts.com/drum-sanding-p-161662.html

#22304-2 Drum Sanding 1-1/2" ($7.91): http://www.ereplacementparts.com/drum-sanding-112-p-161663.html

These do have 1/2" ID holes for the shaft - I took a 1/2" rod, turned down each end for the same bearings used by other manuf'd small wheel attachments. I think these are the bearings I used: http://www.ebay.com/itm/141713115736? at 90 cents each shipped.

Good luck and have fun - the small wheel attachments are really NICE!!!

Thanks Ken. I'll have to see what I can do with the design I came up with. Might work.
