For now anyways.
It happened. I've been nailed by time and circumstances, and I can't open most slippys anymore. I've been operating left handed for a few months due to a problem with my left thumb. Its totally amazing how important the oposing thumb is to doing things. Without it, its like having your 4 fingers in a mitten with no thumb.
I got trigger finger in my thumb for some reason, like it only has two positions, and it clunks when I try to flex it. The clunk feels like a rap with a ball peen hammer. The hand doc gave me a cortizone shot in it a few weeks ago to try to break it free, but no go. It looks like I have to get it operated on, to free up the tendon at the base of the thumb, in the big joint.
The upshot of this is, I can't open most slippys now. I've been using a pocket fixed blade for a while now, so no big deal, but it's a bummer. The same doctor who did Karen's carple tunnel thing last year is going to do my hand, so I guess I'll be back to normal in the near future. But I've finally found a negative to the standard slip joint; they're hard to open with one hand out of kilter. My peanut and sak sits unused, and it's hard to even open a bottle of Alieve.
It's been kind of a weird experiance. I can open a soddie if its not too much spring preasure for the walk and talk, and I can pinch the blade with my fingers of the left hand against the heel of the hand. Maybe the red gods of fate are having some fun with me for bad mouthng one hand lockblades. It's made me really love my little Buck Hartsook and Mike Miller unfolding pocket knife. NowI know how much my friend Dan likes his pocket fixed blades like his Russells hunters scalple and Blackie Collins Buddy. Dan left his right arm from the elbow down in the Republic of South Viet Nam.
I've never given much thought to the opposing thumb, till I tried to open a slip joint, tie a shoe, or twist open a cold brew without using it.
I'm feeling slippy deprived. :grumpy:
Mini rant over. I had to vent guys.
