Well, after 3 years of being a "knife knut" I finally did it. Sharpened up my Emerson Commander very nicely. Was hanging around with my friends showing what a nice job I did. Opened it up and WHAM BAM! Cut the tip off of my thumb. It happen so fast I could not believe my own stupidity.

I guess it again goes to show. Just when you think you know what you are doing, you can really screw up!

Jay,

I can identify. I was standing out back with co-workers the other day and stabbed the tip of my middle finger with me Spydie.

Dang that thing is sharp.

Did you need any stiches?

Jeff Manney: It was way too obvious. I felt like a fool. A good amount of blood (the worst kind: MINE!).

jay - we have all done it MANY times man. I believe it is an initiation rite - it means you are REALLY a knife nut and are willing to spill (your own) blood for your hobby. Be proud! Well that's how I mask my clumsiness when I cut myself open. Was in a store a few weeks back looking at MTs - opening/closing, etc. Noticed small amount of blood on thumb. Made excuses and left, kept bloddied hand hidden from wife!

Everytime I get a new knife, my wife automaticaly gets-out the box of Bandaids.

(I guess that being a "knife-guy", AND trained as an Emergency Medial Technician

I once nicked myself with one of Mr. Fowler's legendary blades at a show. The only thing I could be proud of was that I was more concerned about getting blood on the blade that worrying about my minor injury. It also provided a great excuse to buy it (hey, can I get a break on the price since it's used?).

It's just too easy with a new or unfamiliar
knife...

Do any of you start to feel weird if you've
gone for months with a new knife and still
don't have even a nick to show for it?

I remember a few years back when i was being mildly retarded with my spyderco walker. I was pushing the tip through something on my desk using quite a bit of pressure, and what do you know my finger disengaed the lock, and the damn knife bit me went right to the bone on my left middle finger. Well I can't say the experienc was all bad at least people were able to see me flipping them off for a longer distance. got to love those dayglo bandaids.
