Finally did it...Buck 301

Well,
That particular knife was not planned to be a EDC, only a collectors trophy. So at this point I have done nothing. When the customer service guy for Buck that I know gets back to work I may send it in to see what he thinks they can do to make it perfect. So it will be a rightous closet queen.

In January of 2010 I owned 0 slip joint Bucks. I thought the stockman pattern was stupid because the three cutting blades were superfluous. Fast forward to now...

Buck 300s are among my favorites now. And if you desire something a tad larger, may I suggest you get a Buck 307.

just a small update

I am VERY pleased
prior to this 301, my case jr sodbuster CV was the sharpest i was ever able to get a knife. It pops hair but doesnt shave it

but the 301, i was able to get the clip point main blade so sharp it literally shaves the hair off my arm. I dont know if that is because i am getting better at sharpening knives or if its just this particular blade

but i am like...super excited about this...
I know i posted a couple issues that i wasnt happy about, but there is definately more good than bad and i thought i would share that as well

The BUCK 301’s are great and the new yellow one is very smooth. I like the three springs, always a smooth pull. I have a 307 on order form a BCCI member and just about can’t wait. Keep it sharp and a great EDC.
Bob.

The 371's are nice knives Kev, I have one that is part of my edc stash. If it wasn't marked China, you would never know.;)

Youre right Dave, I have no issues with fit, finish or performance.

My drought is over though, I "accidentally" :D won one last night-looks NIB 2003
edition. Anxiously awaiting its arrival.

Ok, so now i am wondering if i am being paranoid.

when i first got my 301 the clip blade had a slight side to side play when opened, but the other two blades did not.

now i'm noticing that all 3 blades have this slight side to side play when opened.

I dont see that its an issue, but I am alittle concerned since the sheepsfoot and the spey blade didnt have the wiggle when i first bought it.

Is this just something to expect with the 301 pattern? Am I being paranoid? I want this little knife to be perfect and its kinda bugging me that its not...

I have a 301 stockman, that I have had for about 6 years. All blades were tight when new. The clip blade developed a little play after about 6 weeks of use but has not gotten any worse. Use it and don,t worry about it!

Hi,

I have one just like the third from the bottom right hand side which I bought in 1967 or 68. I think it is a very beautifully made knife and until today have never seen another one. Can you tell me a little about it? I'd attach pictures if I could figure out how.

Thanks

Rsmith_77,

If things have loosened up then that bottom rivet, the spring rivet, that was high may have let stuff slip. Are there visible gaps along the springs when viewed from the bottom. When you open all blades and look down in the blade well, do you see light between springs.
If so then that rivet needs tightening. You can send it in or try some home remedy. I know your next question will be how ? Do some BF searching for techniques but I would favor vise over hammer.

rcgivens,
Not sure which photo you are referring to. BUT, if you bought it in the 60's then it is a contract knife made for Buck by Schrade. There were three versions. The first had grooves in the bolster, the next two had smooth bolsters. All had hidden blade pins and all had chamfering on upper edge of clip blade that extended over the long nail nic. (Camillus made Bucks don't)

Check out this old thread to see if your knife fits one of the descriptions.

EDIT: Via PM, knife mentioned by rc was a first edition 301. Grooved bolsters, no model number. Schrade contract. 1966/67 time period.
