About a week ago I was looking for ideas on a knife to make for myself. Well, I didn`t make one, I made two! First up is my new personal daily carry knife. Everyone said to go thin, so being the stubborn old goat that I am, I went 3/16" thick. This one is like a beefed up Hiker`s Backup, 3" blade, 6 1/2" overall, with tulipwood handles and red liners.

The second one I made is something new for me, a chopper. This one has an 8" blade, 1 1/2" tall of 1/8" stock, with a full convex grind. Overall length is just under 13", with purpleheart handles.

This shows the contoured handles, and the red liners on the small one.

And finally, a shot of them together.

Allright John, they look great. Now just ignore the emails you get asking if you have an 8" chopper available;)

Go get em dirty:thumbup:

I was chopping last night with the big one before I put the handles on, and let me tell you, it cuts! I also pounded it into a chunk of wood about a 3/8" and pried it out, no snapping or bending tips. This one is a worker, I will be adding it to my line.

They look great but somehow I think you have the thickness of the blades mixed arround. Don't you think a heavier blade could work better in such a chopper while keeping the small utility knife a thinner?

Anyway, the look great. Keep up the good work,
Mikel

I always have been a little backwards! :D I`m going to make a heavier bladed chopper and do comparison chopping.

I think you'll find the 1/8 chopper thing works out great. And I like the way you set up the belly on that one. Really nice.

Now I`m working on a chopper out of 3/16" 1095 to compare with the thinner one. I`m liking these bigger blades.

That purple heart wood looks wonderful on such a large knife! Nice!!!!

When I told my wife we were going to use the big one for the Thanksgiving turkey, she just gave me "the look".

If you do, there better be pics! Gotta see the turkey with a JK sticking out of it :thumbup: :D (sounds like a great idea by the way)

Nice work, John. I don't think you're off base on the "thin" chopper at all. I don't mind "thick" blades either (in smaller knives) as long as they get thinned out before the edge. I had a 4" Fowler that I think was nearly a quarter inch at the spine but tapered dramatically to the edge. Not comparing knives or makers - making not of what seemed like an extreme when I got it out of the box. I thought "on, no, it's too thick!" It really wasn't after all. Short, thick blades are a comfort because I know I can pry and dig in wood if I have to. On a bigger knife that extra weight adds up fast thought.

Nice form, nice aesthetics - two very useful tools from what I can see.
