Well I finally finished this one up,except the sheath..It is a small Bowie patterened after a 1800's original. The Blade is 5 inches of 5160 forged from a rond bar, then hand rubbed to 2500 grit and lightly buffed with pink scratchless compound,Now the first of a few first's for me I did with the grind on this knife.I used the platten I had made that has the radious of a 6 foot grinding whell to give the same look as the antiques,so this is a hollow grind. The wrap on the ricasso is one piece that is formed and silver brazed then shaped and carved, then so;dered in place. The handle is a one piece casting, this means that the guard--handle frame--and bolsters are all casted in one piece. This was my first time using a milling machine and I used it to make the form to cast then clean up the casting. This was then hand shaped on the guard and front bolsters some, then soldered to the blade. Then I milled the Buffalo horn scales to be a snap fit between the bolsters.Hand rubbed the whole thing down to 1000 grit then buffed with scratchless pink...I also used the mill to square the blade shoulders and the slot in the guard, boy you can't get this close by eye,at least I haven't yet.
Well here are some pictures, what do you think, good or bad...
Let me know,Bruce
