Anyone that's seen me post in the Traditional forum, especially when discussing first knives or the peanut has seen me mention my first knife and that it has been lost for years. Well I was cleaning my closet out yesterday. While going through boxes and bags deciding what to toss or keep I found it. I thought it was gone forever. It's not a pretty knife. It's not a great knife. Actually in it's current condition it feels like it's about to fall apart. The bail is long gone and one of the scales is severely cracked. Everything on it seems loose except for the blades oddly enough. The scales and bolsters feel like they're about to just fall off. But none of that is all that important. I found it and it's now in a safe place. As a child I carried this knife for years. I'm surprised that it didn't get lost in the woods when I was a kid. It's had to have been in that bag for close to 20 yrs.
So while it's been replaced many times over, it's the nostalgia of this knife that caused me to first get a Case peanut.
So here's my very first knife ever. It's an old Colonial powderkeg/small toothpick or whatever you want to call it.

With my peanut for size comparison.

You never forget the first. It doesn't matter if it was a nice one or not. Glad you were able to find it. Many people here can't say that they still have their first knife.

That's really great!

Me, I'd settle for finding a picture of my first knife, the $.99 special I saved up 4 weeks ($.25 allowance per week) to buy from the hardware store, just to revisit what it was.

But again, what a great find. Now you can put your knife, and your wondering brain, properly to rest. :)

Awesome story! That's great that you found it. I lost the first knife I carried as a kid, maybe there's hope yet.

I was in that group until yesterday. I didn't even know it was in the house. I remembered the scale being cracked and figured my Dad tossed it when I was a teen. It's now stored in a safe place. :)

It was really cool to find it. It was like I'd just unboxed a new knife I'd been looking for. It's nice to know it's not lost.

It's a lot smaller than I remember. I picked up the peanut to kind of mentally take it's place. Out of nostalgia of course. I bought the peanut about 25 years after I stopped carrying that knife so you can't say it's actually a replacement. Heh.
In that same bag was a Fairmount Jack knife that I'm currently cleaning up. I'd never heard of Fairmount so I did some research. Seems they were owned by Camillus many many years ago. While they don't seem to be collectible or worth much, it's actually a nice solid feeling knife. I'll get some pics of it when it's not soaking in oil.

That's pretty cool. I can't believe you remember your first knife. I have no idea what my first was, even though I've been into blades and firearms for as long as I can remember.

I was somewhere in my single digits in age. I don't remember how old for sure. I remember Dad giving it to me because I was finally old enough and showed some responsibility. I was so happy to get it so that's why it's so burned into memory. I also carried it everywhere with me. I remember sharpening points on to so many sticks.
This first knife is also why my peanut is black instead of some other handle material.

As an aside, I showed it to my Dad today and he doesn't remember it at all. Doesn't remember the knife or giving it to me. It's burned into my memory.

Glad you found it!

Nice find, always good to be reconnected with one that holds sentimental value. I have two like that, and I am glad to still have them.

Pretty cool that you still have "the one". It reminds me of a GEC #12 Powderhorn jack. Also that Rough black peanut is really cool as well I thought for a while I was the only one that liked the Rough Black. I know my Rough Black Peanut has seen a ton of use and still occasionally finds its way into my pocket. All in all you have great taste in knives.

Congrats on finding your first and thanks for sharing the story.

This is the first knife I carried and used during my early years. Still remember snapping the blade working on my motorcycle ... using it as a screwdriver turned it into a screwdriver. I continued to carry and use it as a reminder not to use a knife to pry. Somehow it got saved in a box along with my grandfather's pocket knife and some other old cheap knives.

Pretty cool. I think my first knife was a Daniel Boone or Davy Crockett Colonial knife, my first REAL knife was a Schrade 7OT lockback from one of my dad's friends. I carried that knife everywhere, and broke the tip off of it. Sold it like an idiot on fleaBay. Wish I could find that one, not a big fan of the pattern but that knife has sentimental value.

That´s a great story... my very first knife was a SAK, which I always have. My dad bought it about 20 years ago. It´s still in a drawer an I know (!) where it is.

Great you have found your first again. :)

Kind regards
Andi

Congrats on finding your first knife!

I was digging around in my tool pouches awhile back and found mine, an Imperial Barlow. Still needs some clean up but I should shoot a picture

I thought about cleaning it up for about one second. But it's in such fragile shape now. I just oiled it and put it in a safe place.

The memories that must bring back to you!

That's a great find.
