Between unemployment, getting my knifemaking business running, getting used to being in one place for more than two weeks at a time, not living out of a suitcase, taking care of squirrels and bottle feeding kittens, and being around the girlfriend most every night, the last few months have been hectic! So I'm going on my first overnighter this year in nearby Goblin Valley (I'll take a lot of pics:thumbup:) and I'm having a dilemma: what knife to take;) I'm hoping to do a little hiking, may have to split some firewood, don't know what the folks we'll be camping with are like (her friends, I've never met 'em) or how prepared they are, maybe have to do a little food prep? Really, I've got a multitude of knives that'll work, but when I went in a looked at my shelves, my brain locked up:eek:

So, let's hear some votes-what would you pack for a belt knife out of these, or which one do you want to see pics of? Here's the options:

Greco 6" Scagel
Busse Meaner
Swamprat Ratmandu
Bark River Boone
Bark River Teddy
Sog Tech Bowie
Busse Sar5

I'll of course have a big chopper and a pocket knife or 3:D, I'm just not sure what to hang on my side:p

Thanks,

Walter

I love Goblin Valley. One of my favorite places in Utah. As for knives, any one of these should work. I've heard the maker's a bit of a tool, but you may have a different opinion of him

Yeah, I've got a couple of that #$@%'s knives laying around, I'm sure one of 'em will end up in the truck:D

Just wanted to be sure you were aware of him. As for the ones you mentioned, I like old school stuff, so I'd go with the Barkies or the Scagel.

Walt, out of the ones you posted, I'd go with you you're large Bushcrafter as my belt knife. But thats just me....

If it were me, I'd go with the middle one in this picture.

It may be hard to get it from the owner but if you can it appears to be a perfect knife.

Funny to hear you ask this. I just picked up one of your large bushcraft styles from Talfuchre (should be here next week). If I were in your shoes, I would bring that, and a new Gransofrs SFA, plus maybe a psk.

Sounds like a great trip, enjoy!

Nice score on that deal of TF's:thumbup: I don't know for sure about the knife:D, but the leatherwork is definitely top-notch!

since you are going to goblin valley, I would suggest somthing like your large moonshine series. That'll teach those goblins......

:D

I like the way you think:p However, the ~20" Siegle Rambo inspired chopper is on wood duty tonight;) It's hard to leave that tan handled one at home, though:foot: Once I get back to work, I'm going to make myself one:thumbup:

Must be nice. "You know, I can really use another knife; I think I'll make one!"

Lucky talented bastids:grumpy:

Naw, just cheap:p If I was talented, I'd make enough to afford the knives I really want. No matter how you slice it, though, those old Scagels and Randalls are way out of my league. Someday, though, I'll at least get to hold one:thumbup:

Well, you've got some great looking blades Walt!!

For a belt knife, anything over 5~5.5" is too cumbersome for me without a special sheath; otherwise the bigger blades get tossed in the pack. I think the Ratmandu would be perfect for the size. I have a great sheath by Okuden for mine and it's one of my top pics when I head out...

I really don't see the problem, Walter. Take them all, of course!!! :D

If your girl friend's friends turn out to be PITAs, at least you'll have something to play with (during the day  )

BTW, anybody know if they're ever going to make Ratmandus again?

Doc

I have never really heard much about the boone, so if you bring that one, be sure to post some feedback

by the by, where did that pic protiurist posted come from? I don't recall seeing it on the for sale forum. Great job on that bottom one! I really like the western look. That syle is second to only scandi's

Walter, Hope you have a good time down in Goblin Valley. I like to camp about halfway between it and Little Wild Horse canyon. It's some pretty country out there.

When will you be going and where do you plan on hiking? I want to get back there for a little dutch oven and hiking fun. Know some nice places to go shooting in the BLM land.

Heber

Well, I ended up going with Doc-Canada's plan:D And I didn't end up using a single one:( Used my pocket knife for dinner (cut up steak), showed off one of the ones I made, and checked out GF's friend's husband's Kukri-looks like I've got a new project:thumbup:I'll have pics up as soon as I get 'em sorted. No knife content, though-way too crowded anytime we went hiking.

BarberPhobic, that pic is from my website I believe, but I did have those up FS here. From what I hear, I guess the gentleman that bought the lower two liked 'em:thumbup:

Heber, we ended up in the main campsite. Holy smokes, I've never seen anything like it:eek: I think next time we'll camp on the BLM land, though if I was going to stay a while I suppose the running water in the main camp would be nice:p Shower and drinking water in the middle of the desert:rolleyes:
