Finally got around to it

I've been chasing plunge lines for far too long now. It only took 6 years to finally get around to making one, so I wanted to show it off. 4" x .75" x .25" W2 water quenched. 1/4x20 hex head cap screws. I didn't temper it, maybe I should. I've dropped this thing twice already.......on carpet. It is screaming hard, for sure. Don't know the RC, but a file just glides off of it. Having the guide should make life a little easier, for sure. Thanks for looking!!! Any thoughts? SAM_1147.jpg

Thoughts? How's about thanks for posting the specs! :)

I've been wanting to make one myself. Yours is more stout than mine'll be though. I'm looking at 1"x?x5/32" I also don't have any way to thread it, unless I can get someone at work to do it.

I'm curious to know about tempering too. I plan to drill the holes then ht, work as quenched and hope I don't drop it.

Good luck. I hope it works really well. Right now I'm just glueing a piece of hardened 1095 to my ricosso, as prescribed by HallHandmade.

As far as the threads, if you can get a tap (had to find one at a True Value), you can do it by hand, as I'm sure you know. I drilled the pilot hole 13/64" through both guide halves, then ran the tap through the holes in the bottom half. Then I enlarged the holes on the top half to 1/4", so the bolt will slide through, and engage the threads on the bottom half. I then assembled and trued everything up. Then did the heat treat. I was concerned that the HT would mess up the threads a bit, but there was no problem at all. I did chase the threads post HT, just to make sure. Then I assembled it and re-squared everything.

Good luck with yours, Strigamort!! I hadn't heard of simply gluing a piece of scrap down as a guide. Pretty cool. Do you use CA (super glue) as adhesive?

Great little tools that's easy to make and will save you a lot of time from chasing and revising plunges!

I took a 2 scrap pieces of steel, super glued them together, shaped, tapped and drilled though both of them and the HT'd it.

Yeah, I use a little line, less than a drop and stick it on lined up with my intended plunge. I tried freehand and ended up having to pull the grind back further into the ricosso to fix it. I'm betting you'll get good results with that.

I should probably just buy a tap kit. Just one of those things every man should probably have anyway.

Thanks for the additional tips. :)
