Khukuri FAQ

Thanks for the info, Uncle Bill. This makes the business of buying a khukuri more personal.

Bishwakarma is the kami caste. When somebody asks me the kami's name I always say, "Bishwakarma," and I am correct about 99.9% of the time. Goldsmiths are named Sunar but they are a minority.

Sarki is the name of the cobblers or leather working caste.

Every Sherpa has the last name of Sherpa -- or Lama.

As I mentioned in some post you need a first or middle name and a tag of some kind.

Khukuri FAQ

Yvsa.
If you ever accepted the Kamis post offered by Pakcik Bill in few of his previous posting, then you can have Bishwakarma after your name ... YVSA BISHWAKARMA! a Nepali Cheerokee!

Talked to Gelbu this AM. He has hired two more but I didn't get their names.

Total 15 full timers, Ganga Ram doing the best he can for 80 years, a couple of village guys helping for a couple of weeks, Gelbu, Pradeep, and a couple of the kamis' high school kids who come in and help on weekends doing cleaning and odd jobs.

Also Gelbu told me he had bought the sewing machine but it must be shipped from India. He found another factory to make us some super frogs until the machine arrives on site.

Khukuri FAQ

Uncle Bill, what is the average kamis' workday like? What time does he come in, what kind of breaks does he get, when does he leave, and what days of the week, if any, does he get off? What about lunch -- what does the typical working man eat?

Just curious about the guys behind the blades.

Thanks, in advance, for sharing your experience.
