Finally Graduated to The Single Line Scribe -

I use a double line too (Height gauge-granite plate) but have to say what blinker said is true(about being able to detect or see small differences). It is amazing how close your eye can actually see.I remember when first starting out as an apprentice mold maker ,a journeyman told me he could probably cut cavity with nothing more than a good 6" scale-at the time I thought "B.S." !! After having made chips for 20+ yrs ,I think (almost) I agree. With opti-visor on(it very rarely leaves my head from dawn till dusk)I can mill or grind something to within .010 or so quite consistantly. It is amazing what the eye can see (in regards to symmetry).Like I said in the first sentence,I still use lines, mics, calipers, surface plates, and yes Higgy,I'm a sucker for making a jig or fixture for everything too.:)

I've had a couple older guys look at my shop and say, "Boy, I don't have all that fancy equipment and I've been mak'n knives for as long as you been alive."

And I think, "Yep, and they suck. So there ya go." :D
