Hey all - I am finally going to pull the trigger on a 2x72 in the next few months and looking for recommendations/suggestions on variable speed 2x72s. I have access to and have been using a Reeder of a family members and really like it - so I am really considering the Reeder. Any reason to consider or benefits to an OMB (Less expensive) or KMG (More expensive) over a Reeder? Open to other suggestions also but those are the 3 I had primarily looked into. Thanks for the help.

I bought a Pheer this last year, Love it!
I also considered a Coote.

I know that those names weren't mentioned, and think they are worth looking into. but I am quality conscious and not made of money. I tend to over research Everything.

Wow those are way more affordable. I had not even heard of those makers yet so thanks for the recommendations. Looks like I could buy both the Pheer and the Coote for the same price as one of the other brands. I will do some more research on the Pheer as that looks like it has lots of features for a good price.

Other than the work table was a little small..... I made a new one easy enough. Plus I don't use a work surface much, other than profiling.

I really like it.
tracks great.
I bought mine without a motor, very good cost wise.
Shipped very good, packaged in a crate like box. Secure. Took a month to get. He makes them in small batches I think? Great guy, answers questions
A fair amount of respectable makers here use them, that's why I bought mine. Couldn't be happier
Mine came with the drive wheel too. I don't think the descriptions say that

Let me know if you are curious about anything.

What's your budget for a grinder? The Reeder can be had for around $1200 total if you buy the basic frame, then order the motor and a Chinese VFD.

I would like to be between 1500-3000. Ideal would be 1500-2500.

Reeder for sure. Since we're not allowed to post links to help folks out when looking for stuff, do a google search on "Reeder Grinder Chassis" and the first hit should be the one to take you direct to the Reeder page for the grinder chassis. Or, to the main page, click the "Shop" at top, then scroll down till you find the grinder chassis for $795. While the $200 set of wheels by Reeder are the best, for $100 you can get a very decent set that will do the job just fine by doing a search on ebay for item #284887453901.
.
Next you'll need a motor and VFD This Chinese VFD will work just fine and last for several years even though it's a NEMA 1 enclosure. Just put a filter over the air inlets to prevent metal dust from getting inside. Item #B0B1WDHNB9 on Amazon. This 1.5 hp, 3 ph motor will do a "decent" job, but a 2hp would be just right. I'd go with a 3450 rpm motor, when used with a 5" drive wheel it gives 5,000 SFPM belt speed. Item #B073F5B3Z3 will lead you to the 1.5 hp motor on Amazon. I would normally go with an IronHorse 3 ph motor but those things have gotten expensive - and "Out of Stock". You might do a search on ebay for item # 125405351044 which is a 2hp, 3ph motor to see what the bidding price will be.

Good luck and have fun - the above provides a variable speed Reeder grinder complete ready to grind. Any grinder you get NEEDS to be variable speed.

Ameribrade. Top notch company run by some great dudes who know how to get s#$t done. Take care of their customers. Machine is an absolute versatile beast to operate. Tracks like butter! You can't beat 'em.

I second this. Customer service is top notch. Tons of awesome accessories. Can't go wrong with them. Never used the other brands, so I may be biased.

I was going to say Ameribrade as well.
I don’t own one, but I have heard a lot of great things about them, I did looked one up and down while I was at this last Blade Show and they seem very well made!

I have used a KMG belt drive VS I got around 10 years ago, it's still going strong in it's new owners shop. I have used Pheers and they worked really nicely and currently have an AmeriBrade I am really enjoying. Brodbeck is another brand to check out, as is the HouseMade brand of built it yourself grinder kit (need some welding, drilling, tapping, fabbing done).

Hey all. I ended up going with the Pheer 454 1.5 variable. It ended up being a great price and in the sweet spot of the range I wanted to spend with accessories. I was able to briefly talk with the maker on the phone and he seemed like a great guy. I'm sure all the suggestions are fantastic but just connected with this on based on price, recommendations and my brief chat with the maker. Now the hard part will be waiting for it to arrive............:)

That’s awesome! Let use know how you like it!

What accessories are you getting?

I am thinking I want a 10" or larger wheel..... :D

Congratulations! Looking forward to hearing all about it after you get some time on it. This thread gave me itchy pockets, and I'm looking at exactly what you got. Laundering funds to support my habits has become increasingly difficult these days. Must. Stay. Strong.

Oh my, they have contact wheel grinders up to 16", which is something I've long admired for toolmaking - not that specific wheel, but larger diameter wheels that job grinders used to use and would be totally inappropriate in a garage shop (they're heavy, and are used wet).

Thanks for bringing them up.
