• Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! I hope that you all have something to be grateful for this year and for many years to come
  • America has reached 250 years, and I am grateful to be here, in the best country in the world. Thank every one of you who helps make this country a better place, those who have gone before and risked it all, and those who've paid the ultimate price to make the United States what we are today.

Happy Birthday America! Let Freedom Ring for all time!

Finally. Modded CS Poll Axe!!

I think I might just try sawing off the ash handle first. What the hell, I already have it. It seems like too much weight to be functional swinging around on a 6ft pole. Maybe I'm just a weakling.

Hey, this looks good. Only 36in though.

Dammit, I've got the head about 3/4 of the way onto the stock ash haft, and it is really tough going. It's not like I can get the thing back off and sand some more either. We don't even have a big hammer down here to use on it. Maybe I'll wedge it between a tree and the trailer hitch on my Dad's truck and push it on down. LOL

If you have two suitable immovable objects or a place to wedge it up, you could try using a bottle jack to seat the head. That would give you a lot more control than trying to pop the throttle on a truck.;)

I've gotten the impression that most pole-axe owners still haven't worked past the basic assembly phase.

OK, I've been a slacker. Here are some pics of my raybateson-inspired version:

The handle is cut to 33" (wish I left another inch), sanded to 600 grit and applied several coats of linseed oil. When I was filing down the back, that diamond pattern emerged and I decided to leave some standing and polish it up a bit. I think it adds a nice touch.

Yes, handsomely done. Is it complete? I like the color.

I would share too but my camera had died somehow, besides, I've been focused on mod'ing the gunstock club and a hanwei dadao. All things in time.

I think it's basically done, though I'll probably add a few more coats of linseed oil here and there, time permitting. One thing I didn't mention before was that I initially gave it one (light) application of walnut stain. It didn't do much more than make the grain boundaries stand out some, but I decided to keep it a plain oil finish after that so I didn't stain it again.

Overall I like it, but one thing I'm not really thrilled about is the screw and barrel set up they give you to pin the head. I was going to drill it open to fit a soft steel rod instead and peen/flare the ends, but decided to wait until I got in a little practice first (which hasn't happened yet, that Norse hawk on the bench is calling me. ;))

I finally threw mine, it sure hit with oomph. I think my handle is somewhere shy of 40 inches. I carved down a pick handle (pic posted on earlier page).

Man, what a PITA this was.
The original piece of Ash that this came with was GARBAGE!. I then had to track down a sutible replacement handle.
Ended up going with a 1 1/2 dowell Hickory, about 48in long. Sanded, stained, and varnished. Turned the handle down some on my lathe to have a place to wrap. Painted the head and wrapped it up. This sucker is FIERCE! Heavy as hell, I have no doubt it would crush bone no problem.
Just for reference, im 6'2.

Me with my newest piece of Awesomeness!!
