Finally...my first INFI

I have not had the opportunity to use the Basic 4 that much. Need a sheath before I can really carry it. However managed to do some kitchen duty:

Cut up around 15 chicken breasts for a stew. Sorry, not plenty of video or picture footage. It performed well with minimal sticking of veggies to the blade compared to a cheap kitchen knife. Also had no problems peeling potatoes.

Some rolling of the edge did occur, able to see it when looking down the edge (reflecting light) and feel with the fingers, however, the rolling of the edge is far less then that on the cheaper knife.

I will try to get pictures of the edge under magnification as well as sharpening it out. How to go about sharpening it...I am still undecided.

Congrats on your first INFI! Great pictures, and you're supposed to cut everything EXCEPT yourself with your knife. I think you were a little confused, I kid I kid ;) Enjoy your knife, but try to stay out of the hospital

You dropped the knife on your foot? I guess that's when you worked out that you need a sheath. :D I did the same a few months ago when playing with a knife (spyderco temperance, I think) whilst sitting down. I thought the edge hadn't got me, until I looked down and saw a small fountain of blood that reached about knee height. The tip had made a tiny puncture wound, but it was obviously deep enough to hit a small artery. I was just thankful the blood went onto varnished harwood, and not onto the rug.

To get back on topic, thinly ground INFI will roll, but it won't chip and is very easy (in my experience) to get back into place. I blunted part of the edge of my anorexic B4 with a dremel when I was grinding off the talon hole. I was amazed that a couple of passes on a leather strop had ti back to hair-shaving. If there's a fair bit of rolling, I would try straightening the edge with something like a ceramic rod or a steel (used like a steel to push the edge back into place, not to grind off the rolled edge), and then just finish on a strop.

Congrats on the Basic 4 Marthinus. Did you pick up a sheath for it since the foot wound?

Marthinus got confused between the chicken and his foot!:p Just a little love bite to remember the B4 by...........:o

Pokey1, as you can see Steven65 is still hassling me about it :) :p However, it has been a good conversation starter and makes people laugh. The funny thing is at our local knife show sitting around a dinner table and you have to lift up our foot for everyone to see.

Trust me I hate a hospital and try to avoid it at all costs! Thanks for the kind words.

Thanks for the advice. I am thinking about using my ceramic benchstone and see how INFI does before going any coarser, but have not been home yet to do it. Hopefully by the weekend.

Jip, I dropped it, however it only felt as if the but of blade hit my foot. It did not peg, only nicked I believe the same way as I took the photo with the stitches. When I looked down there was some blood on the blade and a piece of skin flapping about and I could see the white fat and tendon.

Doctor said I did a good job by missing any massive arteries and nerves by the skin of my teeth.

Sorry to hear about your fountain of blood, but damn, yours must have been a bit of a scare? Squirting all over, mine was more like a river...oozing all over.

Congrats on the Basic 4 Marthinus. Did you pick up a sheath for it since the foot wound?

I dont have the sheath yet but it is on its way. For now I only have a leather fold over sheath to protect my feet from the blade :)

Congratulations and welcome to the fun!!! Don't even use a fine stone on that roll. Just use a SMOOTH steel with a stropping motion and she'll straighten right back true. I don't have a truly smooth steel so i use the smooth shaft of a screwdriver. Works every time, even with dings that look like chips.
Nice little love nibble she gave ya, too!

Update:

I have sharpened the knife a bit now from use around the yard and kitchen and have not experienced the same edge deformation as I mentioned earlier.

Also, managed to get some leather and make a sheath so I can carry it safely. No, I am not a leather worker and still need to stitch and do a simple hole in order to do a basic loop with paracord if I want to do belt carry (that I seldom do). But it will get used more now while out and about going camping so I will update this in a few weeks.

Congrats! I've been kinda wanting a 4... I'm not sure how I feel about the handle because I love micarta. I want to see what's under that C. Maybe I could re-handle a user. Yours looks great!

I had to edit because I just saw the love bite. Fine job sir! Scars of love. I think your sheath turned out very nice.
