Finally... Sharpening Vid

Very nice, Travis!

When you mentioned collapsible and wing nut it got me thinking about a V frame that would fold up like a sven saw.

Messing around in the woodshop today and came up with a few variations ...

12"x18" cross-stick sharpener. 500grit wet/dry sandpaper got my BK9 sharp enough to slice phonebook paper effortlessly. And it can be adjusted to 20°, 22.5°, or 25°.

And here's a smaller version of CM_Rick's, about 6"x13" but, instead of a dowel, I used a router to round-over the edge.

The cross-stick is definitely safer to use by either holding it at the top or inside the 'triangle'.

I'll play around with the design some more and maybe make it out of hardwood like oak or maple. I'll probably replace the wood screws with bolts and wing-nuts to make it adjustable and collapsible without the need of tools.

Not sure what you meant by "safer", but it looks like it will get the job done. How do you like the feasibility/usability?

With the little one, my hand was a little too close for comfort to that big ol' blade. ;)

I think it's great, especially for the larger blades like the 4 and 9.

With something like a Sharpmaker and smaller bench stones, the sharpening motion is more parallel to the edge instead of perpendicular. Felt more like using a pull-through. With the longer run of sandpaper, it allows more perpendicular movement. Using the BK9 on the cross-stick was easy and comfortable.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Hey, man... that's what it's all about. I'm very glad that's it's working out as good for you as it does for me. Your addition to this post is really good validation for my info in this video. Stay sharp! [emoji6]
