Our first snow fall, well one in which the ground is starting to get a bit covered anyhow. I always love the first snowfall of the year and what luck that it arrived on a Saturday !!!

Max and Beta enjoying the frolic

Max is a nice and gentle dog, but he is also really stupid :D He is always getting stuck in some spot and can't figure out how to navigate blockages. Here he is, deciding not to jump but to crawl under a fallen branch. Of course he got stuck. Max wouldn't last too long in the wilderness on his own...

This vine reminded me of the thread where somebody was asking how to wrap their knife. Here is nature's tutorial!

A few knives in and around trees shots...

The mora#1 is just a fuzzy making machine. I'm always impressed at how effortless it is with this knife. The JK kephart was pretty good at the task but not like the mora.

The tinder so plentiful last week was snow laden today. Unfortunately, I didn't bring my firesteel along. I would have liked to see if I could get this guy to spark, at least see if the dryer stuff under the snow back would ignite. Next time....

Poor max gets the snowballs in his pads and his rump collects all the burrs and nettles to be had. Contrast that with Beta's short hair which hardly ever catches things and dries super quick.

Hope the rest of you enjoy your weekend. For those who want to know, there was no chopping performed during this walk :D

They do make little "booties" for dogs feet for winter fun so that they don't get the frozen snow build up in their paws.

Awsome kgd! Max and I would probably get along fine. I'm not much for jumping either.

I'm sharing the same little snow storm.

I just got back home from the two local gun shows going on this weekend. Believe me, you had more fun playing in it than I did driving in it . The roads are a mess. On top of that, I came home empty handed :(.

And in my mind, I still need a place to go....
All my memories were there..... "

Great pics KGD!

Excellent pics kgd!

That one of Max sandwiched between two logs is great. Poor fellow looks concerned. Nice shots of your kephart and Mora too. I often wonder what other hikers make of the fuzz-sticks that W&SS folks carve and discard.

Send some of that snow my way. We're getting a light dusting in Toronto right now, but I doubt there will be any coverage. By contrast, I'm told that Collingwood has even more snow on the ground now than when I was up there last weekend. Sigh.

All the best,

- Mike

Oh, and StretchNM, thumbs up for the Neil Young reference

Ha, I never though of that. Although I often happen along a stump or log that has attracted me before - and then I recognize it for the little shavings taken out of it....

Great pics bro, made me laugh about Max getting stuck under the branch !!!

Still no snow here yet but they have forecast some for next weekend !!!

I wish we got good snowfall here in GA. It's never good. We had a blizzard back in like '91 that was awesome and at my house the snow was 3 feet out from the bank. That was the most fun due to weather I've ever had. I like snow to get DEEP.

Hey kgd, we're getting a dusting of snow here, as well. Looks nice.

Couple of things: Your dogs - BetaMax?????????????

I'm hoping you had other means of making fire. Yes???????

DSC_0044-6.jpg

Looks like either Highbush Cranberry (Viburnum trilobum) or Guelder Rose (V. opulus) - very difficult to tell the two apart. Highbush Cranberry, of course, being a wild edible (after the first frost). Also the shoots can be used for making arrows.

Looks like Oriental Bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus), though I can't tell for sure - it could also be American Bittersweet (C. scandens). We have some of the Oriental Bittersweet around here. It is an invasive plant that kills off the trees it climbs. Here is a picture I took.

CelastrusorbiculatusonPoplar.jpg

You can see where the vine is embedded in the trunk of this Poplar (Populus sp. - don't know which one). It eventually kills the tree.

From our perspective, the vine is a very good basket making material.

Not that you asked...............:o

Awesome doc. I was less than 10 min walk from home. I did have a bic lighter in my jacket - but I realize it isn't the most reliable fire source....:o:o

Thanks for the plant id info!

Same kind of rationalization I heard from people who went for a short 3 hour cruise.

Great pics kgd!

We are getting some snow today too. I hope to get out for a bit tomorrow and get some pics of the NMSFNO that just showed up the other day.

Snow update: Just came back from the store (9:30ish) and it's snowing pretty good here, in fact, it's beautiful!!!!

I'm planning on meeting up with a couple of my buds tomorrow and do a little playing in the woods. Might have something interesting to post later. Supposed to be about -5 C for the afternoon.

She made a wicked cocnut pie to boot.

Great pics KGD!

We have some snow coming down as well!

Great looking dpgs by the way.

Thanks for that pic GP, I forgot just how hot Maryann was.

Very light snow on the ground in New Jersey, too.
Went out for a walk while it was still coming down
but I couldn't really feel the little bit underfoot.

Snow Showers

Silver dust swirling in a crystal breeze,
Myriad motes descending from the sky,
Framing streetlights, an ever-changing frieze;
They chill the air, cover the ground, and I
Stand silent in the crisp cold haze, transfixed:
Adult, or child I was, emotions mixed.
