The other day I was bored and had nothing to do so I decided to try and start a fire with my kershaw firestarter. I tried it a few times before and had no luck at all. I could always get the wood to smoke but never light.

Then I found it. Fatwood. I had this stuff under my nose and didn't even know it. Well i broke off all the flakey stuff on the outside till I got to the wood. Then I shaved off a bunch of nice, thin curls and piled them up.

About 10 strikes later I had a small fire going. I slowly built it up and enjoyed the feeling of accomplishment.

It was deffinetly rewarding to be able to start my own fire with no matches or lighter.

Congrats! I too started my first fire using a Light My Fire yesterday. It gives a great sense of satisfaction!

why dont you try making fire from friction, i was taught the bow and drill method in survival training.

I don't know if this is considered 'cheating' but I find cotton balls
light readily with just a few sparks.

Does anyone have any links or info on different types of natural
tinder and the ease of starting a fire with each? I know Fatwood is good.
I heard Birch bark is good but I can't get it to light via sparks.
Leaves and grass burn up way to fast. It seems most hard wood
bark sucks.

thanks, mike

to get birch bark to light with sparks, you need to scratch the bark
and make it into a realy fine tinder by scraping it with the knife,
then simply apply a spark or two.
